Maritime Washington National Heritage Area
Maritime Washington National Heritage Area is a federally designated National Heritage Area in the state of Washington. It encompasses nearly 3000 miles of the state's saltwater shorelines from Grays Harbor County to the Canadian border, and includes 18 federally recognized tribes across 13 counties. It aims to celebrate the cultures of both the indigenous peoples in their past and current forms, as well as the growth of maritime industry in the state. The Maritime Washington National Heritage Area was established in 2019. It is administered by the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation. In the United States, a National Heritage Area (NHA) is a site designated by Act of Congress, intended to encourage historic preservation of the area and an appreciation of the history and heritage of the site. There are currently 62 NHAs, some of which use variations of the title, such as National Heritage Corridor. (which serves as an official list of all 55 National Heritage Areas) National Heritage Areas are not National Park Service units or Federal lands, federally owned or managed land. NHAs are administered by State governments of the United States, state governments or non-profit organizations or other private corporations, referred to as ''local coordinating entities''. Grays Harbor County
Grays Harbor County is a county in the U.S. state of Washington. As of the 2020 census, the population was 75,636. Its county seat is Montesano, and its largest city is Aberdeen. Grays Harbor County is included in the Aberdeen Micropolitan Statistical Area. History The county is presently named after a large estuarine bay near its southwestern corner. On May 7, 1792, Boston fur trader Robert Gray crossed the bar into a bay which he called Bullfinch Harbor, but which later cartographers would label Chehalis Bay, and then Grays Harbor. The Olympic Peninsula is a large arm of land in western Washington that lies across Puget Sound from Seattle, and contains Olympic National Park. It is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the east by Hood Canal. Cape Alava, the westernmost point in the contiguous United States, and Cape Flattery, the northwesternmost point, are on the peninsula. Puget Sound ( ) is a sound of the Pacific Northwest, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean, and part of the Salish Sea. It is located along the northwestern coast of the U.S. state of Washington.
