Marist Rugby Club (Invercargill)
Invercargill Marist Rugby Football Club is an amateur New Zealand rugby union club based in the Southland Region of New Zealand. Their senior team plays in the Southlandwide Premier Division for the Galbraith Shield. The club boasts one of the most loyal supporters groups in the region which can be credited to Peter D Grace, the founder of the Supporters Club. The current team captained by former New Zealand Under-20 representative Scott Eade features five current Southland representatives. The local patron of the rugby club is Nathan "Birdman" Burgess. Southland Rugby Football Union
Rugby Southland (formerly the Southland Rugby Football Union) is the provincial rugby union who govern the Southland region of New Zealand. Their headquarters are at Rugby Park Stadium in Invercargill, which is also the home ground of the union's professional team, the Southland Stags who compete in the Mitre 10 Cup Championship Division and challenge for the Ranfurly Shield. Despite their proud history, no Southland team has ever won the top division of the New Zealand National Provincial Championship since organised competition began in 1976. However, they have won the NPC second division title five times and held the Ranfurly Shield seven times, most recently in 2011 where they defended the shield twice before losing it to Taranaki. Invercargill ( , mi, Waihōpai is the southernmost and westernmost city in New Zealand, and one of the southernmost cities in the world. It is the commercial centre of the Southland region. Southland Region
Southland ( mi, Murihiku) is New Zealand's southernmost region. It consists mainly of the southwestern portion of the South Island and Stewart Island/Rakiura. It includes Southland District, Gore District and the city of Invercargill. The region covers over 3.1 million hectares and spans over 3,400 km of coast. Paul William Henderson (born 21 September 1964) is a former New Zealand rugby union player. A flanker, Henderson represented Southland and Otago at a provincial level and the in Super Rugby. He was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, between 1989 and 1995, playing 25 matches for the team, including seven internationals. Frank Oliver (rugby Union)
Francis James "Frank" Oliver (24 December 1948 – 16 March 2014) was a New Zealand rugby union player and coach. He captained the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, in four matches. Biography Born in Dunedin and educated at Lawrence District High School, Oliver made his provincial rugby debut for Southland in 1969. He later also played for Otago and Manawatu, playing a total of 213 first-class games. Oliver played in the forwards as a lock and appeared in 43 matches for the All Blacks — 17 of them full test appearances — between 1976 and 1981, captaining the team in four matches. After retiring as a player in 1983, Oliver coached the Manawatu provincial team from 1995 to 1997 and the short-lived Central Vikings merged team from 1998 to 1999. Hoani MacDonald
Hoani MacDonald (born 21 August 1978) is a former New Zealand Rugby Union, rugby union player and current coach. He played provincial rugby for Southland Rugby, Southland, and for the Highlanders (rugby), Highlanders in Super Rugby. In September 2008, he joined Welsh side the Dragons (rugby union), Newport Gwent Dragons in the Pro14, Celtic League. MacDonald signed with the Melbourne Rebels for the 2011 Super Rugby season. On 20 October 2012, MacDonald suffered a cardiac arrest in a match for Southland Rugby, Southland against Counties Manukau Rugby Union, Counties Manukau in an ITM Cup semi final. He had CPR performed on the pitch, before being transferred to hospital and placed in an induced coma. MacDonald was in hospital for one week and doctors fitted him with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator. As a result, he retired from playing rugby.
