Marisa Carnesky
Marisa Carr (born 1 February 1971), who performs as Marisa Carnesky, is a British live artist and showwoman. She uses spectacular entertainment forms, including fairground devices and stage illusion, and draws on themes of contemporary ritual, to investigate social issues from an ecofeminist perspective. ''Time Out'' declared that Carnesky's 'unique niche of interactive end-of-the-pier esoterica has fused ghost trains, anatomical models and tattoo culture with religion, feminism and class consciousness in ways both playful and rewardingly demanding.' Carnesky has won many awards, including the Laurence Olivier for Best Entertainment in 2004, Edinburgh Festival Herald Angel in 2005 and Time Out Best Theatre in 2004. Koringa
Renée Bernard, known as Koringa (1913-1976) was a French circus performer and snake charmer. She was billed as the "Only Female Fakir in the World" and "the only female yogi". Early life Renée Bernard was born in Bordeaux, France, in 1913. She was five feet tall and of French Indochina ancestry. However, her promotional materials claimed that Koringa was born in Rajisthan, India, having been orphaned at the age of three and raised by fakirs who had taught her their skills. One English reporter wrote that she only spoke Spanish and German. Career Cyril Bertram Mills of the Bertram Mills Circus discovered and recruited Bernard in 1937 when she was performing an act involving climbing barefoot up a ladder made of swords for a small French circus. Annie Oakley
Annie Oakley (born Phoebe Ann Mosey; August 13, 1860 – November 3, 1926) was an American sharpshooter who starred in Buffalo Bill's Wild West show. Oakley developed hunting skills as a child to provide for her impoverished family in western Ohio. At age 15, she won a shooting contest against an experienced marksman, Frank E. Butler, whom she later married in 1876. The pair joined Buffalo Bill in 1885, performing in Europe before royalty and other heads of state. Audiences were astounded to see her shooting out a cigar from her husband's hand or splitting a playing-card edge-on at 30 paces. She earned more than anyone except Buffalo Bill himself. After a bad rail accident in 1901, she had to settle for a less taxing routine, and toured in a play written about her career. Florence Shufflebottom
Florence Shufflebottom (12 December 1931 – 25 October 2014) was a fairground performer, sharpshooter and snake-charmer who became known as the 'British Annie Oakley'. Early life and family history Florence was born into a family of circus performance. Her paternal grandfather was William Shufflebottom (1850s–1916), who worked as a Buffalo Bill impersonator under the name 'Texas Bill'. He and his wife, Rosina (1872–1937) had ten children, including Florence's father Richard Shufflebottom. Rosina was also a snake-charmer, going on to outlive William, who died in 1916 after being crushed by a horse during a performance. Miss La La (born April 21, 1858) was an expert aerialist who served as muse to Edgar Degas and was depicted in his 1879 painting ''Miss La La at the Cirque Fernando''. She was also depicted in a poster for the Folies Bergère. She was the star of Troupe Kaira, a traveling circus act, and performed with the Cirque Fernando, based in Montmartre. Latitude Festival
The Latitude Festival is an annual music festival that takes place in Henham Park, near Southwold, Suffolk, England. It was first held in July 2006 and has been held every year since, apart from 2020, when it was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, the festival went ahead as part of the government's live event pilot scheme, and was the UK's first full-capacity festival since 2019. The festival presents musicians, bands and artists across four stages - the Obelisk Arena, the BBC Sounds Stage, the Sunrise Arena and the Alcove. The Tarot of Marseilles is a standard pattern of Italian-suited tarot pack with 78 cards that was very popular in France in the 17th and 18th centuries for playing tarot card games and is still produced today.
