Mariquita, Tolima
San Sebastián de Mariquita is a town and municipality in the Tolima department of Colombia, about northwest of Bogotá. This town and municipality contains several important Spanish settlements that were located here due to its vicinity to the Magdalena River. Today, Mariquita is frequented by tourists from the capital visiting attractions like the Medina Waterfalls (''Cataratas de Medina'') and the mint (''Casa de la Moneda''). The Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada died there and is buried in the Primatial Cathedral of Bogotá. Today it is home to large hotels and haciendas, among them Villa de los Caballeros. Mariquita Pérez was a Spanish composition doll created in the late 1930s and produced until 1976, considered the most famous doll in the country's history. It was created by the high society woman Leonor Coello de Portugal, who was inspired by other dolls such as the French Bleuette and the Argentine Marilú. Mariquita Pérez was an immediate success and became the most coveted doll of 1940s and 1950s Spain, although its high cost made it a toy reserved for girls from the wealthier families. Mariquita, often referred to as Madame Mariquita, (1838/40–1922) was an Algerian-born dancer who became a ballerina, and later a successful choreographer and ballet mistress at various theatres in Paris from the 1870s until 1920.Though best known for her work at the Opéra-Comique, where she was a trailblazer in modernizing French ballet during the 1900s and 1910s, Mariquita also staged popular ballets and divertissements for boulevard theatres and music halls throughout her life. Highly prolific, she created almost 300 ballets over a period of 50 years. Mariquita Gill
Mariquita Gill (1861 - 1915) was an American painter who lived in Giverny, France during the 1890s. Biography Gill was born in 1861 in Montevideo, Uruguay. She began studying art in Boston in the 1880s. She continued her studies at the Art Students League of New York. In 1885 she moved to Paris where she studied at the Académie Julian. By the 1890s she had seen an exhibit of Claude Monet's work and subsequently moved to Giverny. Gill exhibited her work at the Palace of Fine Arts at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Gill returned to America in 1897, settling in Massachusetts. She exhibited her work at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Copley Society of Art, the Boston Art Club, and the Society of American Artists. Mariquita Jenny Moberly , ''née'' Phillips, (2 November 1855 – 1 November 1937) was an English artist, working in oil paints and watercolours. Biography Moberly was born on 2 November 1855 ''London, England, Church of England Births and Baptisms, 1813-1906'' to John Phillips and Jane Atkins Phillips at Deptford in London. Her name, ''mariquita'', (literally, "Little Mary") means ladybird in Spanish. Moberly studied in Germany and under Carolus-Duran in Paris. She painted portraits, figure studies, animals and landscapes in oils, watercolours and pastels. Moberly exhibited at the Royal Academy in London, with the New Watercolour Society and at both the Royal Hibernian Academy and the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol. Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson y de Mendeville, also known as Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson (1 November 1786 – 23 October 1868), was an Argentine socialite and activist from Buenos Aires. She was one of the city's leading ''salonnières'', whose ''tertulias'' gathered many of the leading personalities of the time. She is widely remembered because the Argentine National Anthem was sung for the first time in her home, on 14 May 1813. One of the first politically outspoken Argentine women, Mariquita Sánchez de Thompson has been considered the most active female figure in the revolutionary process. Sánchez married her cousin, Martín Thompson, in 1805. She authored a first-hand account and description of the failed British invasions of Buenos Aires which illustrated the ambivalence felt by the locals regarding the invasions. Mariquita Dorotea Francesca Tennant born Mariquita Dorotea Francesca Eroles (1 November 1811 – 21 February 1860) was a Spanish-born social reformer. She opened her house and started to help abused women around Windsor, Berkshire, Windsor in England. Life Tennant was born in Barcelona in 1811. She was the eldest daughter of Don Antonio Eroles and Sancho de Cal Tirs of the Pla de Sant Tirs. Her father was commander of the Miquelets de Organyà between 1821 and 1823 and, under the command of Francisco Espoz y Mina, who at the time, was Captain General of Catalonia, fought the royalist troops in support of Ferdinand VII of Spain. When the general was forced into exile in London in late 1823, Antonio Eroles followed him with his wife and four children: Mariquita, Isidro, Antonio and Rosa.
