Marion Dufresne (1994)
The ''Marion Dufresne II'' is a research and supply vessel named in honour of the 18th-century French explorer Marc-Joseph Marion du Fresne launched in 1995 and having two main missions: logistic support for the French Austral Islands and oceanographic research. The ''Marion Dufresne II'' ( IMO 9050814) is chartered by the French TAAF on an annual basis from the French shipping line CMA CGM (The French Line) and is maintained by the IPEV (Institut polaire françaisPaul-Émile Victor). The current ''Marion Dufresne II'' is the replacement for slightly smaller ''Marion Dufresne I'' that served the TAAF from 1973 to 1995. The ship was constructed by Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre of Normandy, France and delivered on 12 May 1995; it is registered out of the port of Marseille but its base of operations is the island of La Réunion. The first voyage of Kerguelen was an expedition of the French Navy to the southern Indian Ocean conducted by the fluyts ''Fortune'' and ''Gros Ventre'', under Lieutenant Yves-Joseph de Kerguelen-Trémarec. The aims of the expedition were to survey recently discovered sea routes between Isle de France (now Mauritius) and India, to seek the postulated ''Terra Australis Incognita'' (undiscovered Southern land), and to explore Australia. After successfully completing the first part of the mission, ''Fortune'' and ''Gros Ventre'' sailed South, and discovered the Kerguelen Islands. After the two ships got separated in the fog, ''Fortune'' aborted her mission and returned to Isle de France, where the news of the discovery led to vastly overenthusiastic descriptions of the new lands. ''Gros Ventre'' was an armed storeship of the French Navy. She is notable for taking part in the First voyage of Kerguelen and for her subsequent solo mission of discovery to Australia. Anse du Gros Ventre was named in her honour. Career ''Gros Ventre'' was built at Bayonne on plans by Léon-Michel Guignace, on plans by Jean-Joseph Ginoux, as a 16-gun armed storeship. Port-aux-Français
Port-aux-Français is the main settlement of the Kerguelen Islands, and French Southern and Antarctic Lands, in the south Indian Ocean. Occupancy The settlement is located on the shore of the Gulf of Morbihan. About 45 residents spend the winter there; the group can reach over 120 people in summer. The place was chosen in 1949 by the head of mission Pierre Sicaud because of its sheltered location which was suitable for the construction of an air runway, though this was never built. From 1955 to 1957, a French slaughterhouse company, SIDAP, built an elephant seal processing plant equipped with Australian machinery. The factory opened its doors just after the wedding of the director, Marc Péchenart, and Martine Raulin on 16 December 1957. This was the first marriage ever celebrated on the islands. Alfred-Faure or Port Alfred is a permanent French scientific station on Île de la Possession (Possession Island) of the subantarctic Crozet Archipelago in the South Indian Ocean. Research Station It is located at the eastern end of the island on a plateau 143 m (460 ft) above sea level. Depending on the season, there are between 15 and 60 personnel working at the base. Their scientific work includes meteorological, seismic, biological and geological research. The research station was first established during the austral summer of 1963–1964.
