Mario Ponzo
Mario Ponzo (; June 23,1882 – January 9, 1960) was an Italian academic psychologist. He was also the Professor Emeritus of Psychology at the University of Rome as well as the Honorary President of the Italian Society of Psychology. He was born in Milan, Italy to a Piedmontese family. Academic career He went on to study medicine at the University of Turin while also studying psychology under Frederico Kiesow, receiving his degree in 1906. He was appointed docent in psychology in 1911 and worked under Kiesow for twenty-five years after his graduation, until he was asked to join the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Rome in 1931. There, he succeeded Sante De Sanctis as the chair of psychology and remained in the position until his retirement in 1952. After his retirement he worked as a non-staff professor for an additional five years, and was named Professor Emeritus in 1958. Ponzo Illusion
The Ponzo illusion is a geometrical-optical illusion that was first demonstrated by the Italian psychologist Mario Ponzo (1882–1960) in 1911. He suggested that the human mind judges an object's size based on its background. He showed this by drawing two identical lines across a pair of converging lines, similar to railway tracks. The upper line looks longer because we interpret the converging sides according to linear perspective as parallel lines receding into the distance. In this context, we interpret the upper line as though it were farther away, so we see it as longer – a farther object would have to be longer than a nearer one for both to produce retinal images of the same size. Sante De Sanctis (7 February 1862 – 20 February 1935) was an Italian physician, psychologist, and psychiatrist. He is considered one of the founders of the Italian psychology and pediatric psychiatry. Life Sante De Sanctis was born on 7 February 1862 in Parrano, where his family had resided since the 16th century. He graduated in medicine at La Sapienza University of Rome with a thesis on aphasia in 1886. He began working in 1891 at the Roman laboratory of pathological anatomy of Santa Maria della Pietà psychiatric hospital, directed by Giovanni Mingazzini. In those years he went to Zurich and Paris to complete his psychiatric studies.
