Mario Gallo (director)
Mario Gallo (July 31, 1878 – October 2, 1945) was an Italian-born, Argentine film director of the 1900s and 1910s and one of the early directors in the cinema of Argentina. He directed what is nowadays considered the country's first fiction feature movie, ''El fusilamiento de Dorrego'', now lost. Born in Barletta, Apulia, southern Italy, Gallo arrived in Argentina in 1905 and began directing in 1909 ''El fusilamiento de Dorrego'', which he presented a year later. Argentine cinema had so far consisted of shorts depicting parts of Buenos Aires and even a documentary by Eugène Py, in 1900, but Gallo's film was the first to be a feature work of fiction. In later years, Gallo claimed to have filmed other films first, all equally lost and of which remained no evidence. Gallo's films consisted of short glimpses of reenacted Argentine history - historical events, myths and battles. He died at Buenos Aires on October 2, 1945. is a character created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. He is the title character of the ''Mario'' franchise and the mascot of Japanese video game company Nintendo. ''El fusilamiento de Dorrego'' (''The Execution of Dorrego'') is a 1908 Argentina, Argentine film written and directed by Mario Gallo and starring , , and . It depicts the 1828 death of statesman Manuel Dorrego, played by Rosich. It is considered to be a lost film. Production The director Mario Gallo, an Italian who had arrived in Argentina in 1905, began shooting the country's first fiction films in 1908. The traditional account, endorsed by film researcher and historian Pablo C. Ducrós Hicken, is that ''El fusilamiento de Dorrego'' was released on 24 May 1908. Other researchers date its filming two years later, which would make 1909's ''La Revolución de Mayo'' the first. Filming took place on the terrace of the Teatro Nuevo and in the Parque Tres de Febrero, Palermo Woods of Buenos Aires. Barletta () is a city, ''comune'' of Apulia, in south eastern Italy. Barletta is the capoluogo, together with Andria and Trani, of the Province of Barletta-Andria-Trani. It has a population of around 94,700 citizens. The city's territory belongs to the Valle dell'Ofanto. Eugène Py
Eugène Py (19 May 1859 – 26 August 1924) was a major early French cameraman, cinematographer and film director and is widely considered the founding pioneer of the cinema of Argentina. Born in Carcassonne, Aude, Languedoc-Roussillon, France he moved to Buenos Aires in the late 1880s. Py's early films included ''Visita del Dr Campos Salles a Buenos Aires'' (1900) (the first Argentine documentary, and '' La Revista de la Escuadra Argentina'' and '' Visita del general Mitre al Museo Históric'' (1901). Py introduced the concept of recording history in the making in Argentina, by filming the arrival of the Brazilian president at the time accompanied by the Argentine president, and filming Alberto Santos-Dumont during a small recording that went on to capture what is probably the first "gag" in the country's history (a third man kept standing between Py and Dumont, interrupting the film, until he received a spit in the face, upon which recording finished).
