Marine Transport Line (MTL) of New York, New York was a commercial steamship service started to support the needs of support charter shipping for the Maritime Commission and War Shipping Administration during World War 2. During wartime the Marine Transport Line operated Victory ships, and also a few other ships. After the war it moved to operating mostly tanker ships. Marine Transport Line Inc. made headline news with the sinking of the SS ''Marine Electric'' in 1983, an enlarged World War 2 tanker. SS ''Harvey Cushing'' was a Liberty ship built in the United States during World War II. She was named after Harvey Cushing, an American neurosurgeon, pathologist, writer and draftsman. A pioneer of brain surgery, he was the first exclusive neurosurgeon and the first person to describe Cushing's disease. Construction ''Harvey Cushing'' was laid down on 5 September 1943, under a Maritime Commission (MARCOM) contract, MC hull 1210, by the St. Johns River Shipbuilding Company, Jacksonville, Florida; she was sponsored by Betsey Cushing Roosevelt Whitney, the daughter of the namesake, and was launched on 31 October 1943. T2-SE-A1
The T2 tanker, or T2, was a class of oil tanker constructed and produced in large quantities in the United States during World War II. Only the T3 tankers were larger "navy oilers" of the period. Some 533 T2s were built between 1940 and the end of 1945. They were used to transport fuel oil, diesel fuel, gasoline and sometimes black oil-crude oil. Post war many T2s remained in use; like other hastily built World War II ships pressed into peacetime service, there were safety concerns. As was found during the war, the United States Coast Guard Marine Board of Investigation in 1952 stated that in cold weather the ships were prone to metal fatigue cracking, so were "belted" with steel straps. USNS ''Paoli'' (T-AO-157) was a ''Gettysburg''-class fuel tanker, built at Sun Shipbuilding & Drydock Co. in Chester, Pennsylvania. A Type T2–SE–A1 tanker, it was hull number 401 and Maritime Commission number 1734. The ship was laid down on 18 July 1944, launched on 31 October 1944, sponsored by Mrs. Lina Martin, and delivered to the Maritime Commission on 11 November 1944 for operation by War Emergency Tankers, New York City. Service history ''Paoli'' made oil runs to the United Kingdom, between the Caribbean and the east coast; and to the Persian Gulf during World War II. On 5 January 1946 the ship was transferred to Sieling & Jarvis of Newport News, Virginia, and then sold to Cities Service Oil Co., on 14 January 1947, for $1,797,871.78. The SS ''Wheaton Victory'' was a class of Victory ship built during World War II under the Emergency Shipbuilding program. She was launched by the California Shipbuilding Company on 22 March 1945. The ship was completed and delivered to the wartime operator of all United States oceangoing shipping, the War Shipping Administration (WSA), on 14 April 1945. ''Wheaton Victory'' was assigned to Marine Transport Line, under a standard WSA operating agreement at that time. That agreement continued until the ship's sale in 1947. SS Adelphi Victory
USNS ''Adelphi'' (T-AG-181) was one of 12 ships scheduled to be acquired by the United States Navy in February 1966 and converted into Forward Depot Ships for service with the Military Sea Transport Service. The SS Adelphi Victory (MCV-760) was chosen for this conversion and assigned the name ''Adelphi'', but the program was cancelled and the ships were not acquired by the Navy. She was built under the Emergency Shipbuilding program for World War II. For post World War II work she was operated by Marine Transport Line of San Francisco. After her post war duties in 1947 she was laid up in the National Defense Reserve Fleet, in the James River. In 1966 she was removed from the Reserve Fleet and reactivated for the Vietnam War.
