The Marine Parade Group Representation Constituency is a five-member Group Representation Constituency (GRC) located in the central, eastern and north-eastern areas of Singapore. The constituency consists of a section of Bedok, Chai Chee, Geylang, Kaki Bukit, Kallang, Kembangan, Marine Parade, Mountbatten, Ubi, Serangoon and Hougang. There are a total of 5 divisions in this GRC: Marine Parade, Geylang Serai, Braddell Heights, Joo Chiat and Kembangan-Chai Chee. Marine Parade Single Member Constituency
Marine Parade Constituency was a single-member constituency in Marine Parade, Singapore. It was formed in 1976 after the land reclamation works to build Marine Parade were completed and carved out from Joo Chiat Constituency. Goh Chok Tong made his political debut in the constituency when it was formed in 1976. He would later become the second Prime Minister of Singapore. Chai Chee
Chai Chee (), also known as Kampong Chai Chee, is a housing estate located in the town of Bedok in Singapore. The estate was named after a village known as Kampong Chai Chee which formerly occupied the vicinity. It is served by two major namesake roads, namely Chai Chee Street and Chai Chee Drive, with minor lanes of Chai Chee Road, Chai Chee Avenue and the original Jalan Chai Chee. Part of the estate today sits atop a hill that overlooks neighbouring Kembangan and Opera Estate. Etymology In the Hokkien dialect of the Chinese language, Chai Chee may be translated to mean ''Vegetable Market'' (菜市). The People's Action Party (abbreviation: PAP) is a major conservative centre-right political party in Singapore and is one of the three contemporary political parties represented in Parliament, alongside the opposition Workers' Party (WP) and Progress Singapore Party (PSP). Initially founded as a traditional centre-left party in 1954, the leftist faction was soon expelled from the party in 1961 by Lee Kuan Yew in the midst of Singapore's merger with Malaysia, desiring to move the party's ideology towards the centre after its first electoral victory in 1959. Tan Chuan Jin
Tan Chuan-Jin (; born 1969) is a Singaporean politician and former brigadier-general who has been serving as Speaker of the Parliament of Singapore since 2017. A member of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), he has been the Member of Parliament (MP) representing the Kembangan–Chai Chee division of Marine Parade GRC since 2011. Before entering politics, Tan served in the Singapore Army between 1987 and 2011 and attained the rank Brigadier-General. Joo Chiat
Joo Chiat Road is an arterial road and a residential conservation area in the eastern part of Singapore, and is located between Geylang Serai and Marine Parade Road. It is mainly bounded by conserved shophouses that are colourfully painted on both sides of the road. The stretch of road is either designated as a single directional or a single lane road in one direction. History Before 1917, Joo Chiat Road was known as the Confederate Estate Road. Geylang Serai
Geylang is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west. Serangoon () is a planning area and residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. Ubi, Singapore
Kampong Ubi, also known as Ubi Estate, is a subzone located in the planning area of Geylang in the Central Region of Singapore. It lies within a somewhat rhombic piece of land bounded by Airport Road at the north, the Pan-Island Expressway at the south, Eunos Link at the east and Paya Lebar Road at the west. The area was formerly a Malay village. Etymology and early history The Malay word ''Ubi'' refers to the tapioca plant. Malays used to grow small tapioca farms in the area. Marine Parade is a planning area and residential estate located in the Central Region of Singapore. Straddling the tip of the southeastern coast of Pulau Ujong, Marine Parade serves as a buffer between the Central and East regions of the city-state. Bordering it are the planning areas of Geylang to the north, Kallang to the northwest, Bedok to the northeast, Marina East to the southwest and the Singapore Straits to the south.
