Marine Commando Regiment
The creation of a Canadian Marine Commando Regiment (MCR) was suggested as a possibility in 2007, potentially to be based at Canadian Forces Base Comox. It was reported to have a potential initial strength of approximately 250 members. The initiative was never advanced beyond the concept stage. Background The concept of a mobile combined force was originally conceived in 1994, but due to reduced operating budgets during the 1989–2002 period, the Canadian Forces simply did not have the budget to develop a new branch at that time. Following the events of September 11, 2001, as well as the brief 2006 Lebanon War during which many Canadian passport-holders were evacuated, the idea was once again revived in the form of the Marine Commando Regiment, as well as the Canadian Special Operations Regiment (separate from the MCR). CFB Comox
Canadian Forces Base Comox , commonly referred to as CFB Comox or 19 Wing, is a Canadian Forces Base located north northeast of Comox, Vancouver Island, British Columbia. It is primarily operated as an air force base by the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and is one of two bases in the country using the CP-140 Aurora anti-submarine/maritime patrol and surveillance aircraft. Its primary RCAF lodger unit is 19 Wing, commonly referred to as 19 Wing Comox. CFB Comox's airfield is also used by civilian aircraft. RIMPAC, the Rim of the Pacific Exercise, is the world's largest international maritime warfare exercise. Canadian Airborne Regiment
The Canadian Airborne Regiment (french: links=, Régiment aéroporté canadien) was a Canadian Forces formation created on April 8, 1968. It was not an administrative regiment in the commonly accepted British Commonwealth sense, but rather a tactical formation manned from other regiments and branches. It was disbanded in 1995 after the Somalia affair. Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI, generally referred to as the Patricia's) is one of the three Regular Force infantry regiments of the Canadian Army of the Canadian Armed Forces. Formed in 1914, it is named for Princess Patricia of Connaught, daughter of the then-Governor General of Canada. The regiment is composed of three battalions, for a total of 2,000 soldiers. The PPCLI is the main lodger unit of Canadian Forces Base (CFB) Edmonton in Alberta and CFB Shilo in Manitoba, and attached to 3rd Canadian Division; as such, it serves as the "local" regular infantry regiment for much of Western Canada.
