Maria Gommers
Maria ("Mia") Francisca Philomena Hoogakker-Gommers (born 26 September 1939) is a retired Dutch athlete, who competed mainly in the 800 metres. She was the second female world record-holder over 1500 metres in October 1967 at Sittard (The Netherlands), breaking the record of Anne Smith, who set the record in June of that year, by almost two seconds. Gommers competed for The Netherlands in the 1968 Olympics held in Mexico City, Mexico in the 800 metres, where she won the bronze medal. On 14 June 1969 she also broke Smith's world record on the mile in an event in Leicester. Stein, Limburg
Stein (, ) is a municipality and a town in the southeastern Netherlands. The municipality had a population of in and covers an area of of which is water. The municipality of Stein makes part of the region of South Limburg and lies between the city of Geleen in the east and Beek in the southeast, and lies furthermore west of interchange Kerensheide and the chemical industries of Chemelot. The world record in the mile run is the fastest time set by a runner in the middle-distance track and field event. World Athletics is the official body which oversees the records. Hicham El Guerrouj is the current men's record holder for the Imperial mile with his time of 3:43.13, while Sifan Hassan has the women's record of 4:12.33. Since 1976, the mile has been the only non-metric distance recognized by the IAAF for record purposes. However, in international competitions such as the Olympics the term "mile" almost always refers to a distance of 1,500 meters, which is 109.344 meters shorter than an Imperial mile, even though four "full" laps of a 400 meter track is equal to 1,600 meters. Ada Kok
Aagje ("Ada") Kok (born 6 June 1947, in Amsterdam, North Holland) is a former Dutch swimmer who ranked among the world's best in the butterfly stroke category during the 1960s. Her international career started in 1962 when, at the age of fifteen, she took the European title in the 100 m butterfly in Leipzig. She was also part of the silver 4×100 m medley relay team. At the Tokyo Olympics two years later she finished second in both events. She was also good at freestyle swimming, which showed when she took second place in the 400 metres at the 1966 European Championships in Utrecht. In the same tournament she also won the 100 m butterfly and the 4×100 m relay. She achieved nine world records between 1963 and 1967 in the 100 m and 200 m (not introduced until later). Ellen Tittel
Ellen Tittel (later Wellmann, later Wessinghage, born 28 June 1948) is a retired West German middle-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 m event. She won the European indoor title in 1973, placing third in 1975, and had another third-place finish at the 1971 European Outdoor Championships. She reached the 1500 m finals at the 1972 and 1976 Summer Olympics, but abandoned the 1972 race due to stomach cramps. In 1971 she helped to set a new world record in the 4 × 800 m relay. Domestically Tittel set a national record in 1969 and won the national title in 1970-76. In 1975 she was chosen the German Sportspersonality of the Year. Tittel is a lawyer by profession. Paola Pigni (30 December 1945 – 11 June 2021) was an Italian middle- and long-distance runner. She was a three-time world champion in cross country and held the world record over five distance running events on the track, from 1500m to 10,000m. Biography Pigni competed for her native country at the 1972 Summer Olympics held in Munich, West Germany, where she won the bronze medal in the women's 1500 m. She was the winner of the France version of the 1970 International Cross Country Championships. Anne Smith (runner)
Anne Rosemary Smith (31 August 1941 – 9 November 1993), was a sprinter and middle distance runner, who specialised in the 1500 metres and mile events. She represented Great Britain and Northern Ireland at the 1964 Tokyo Olympic Games. In 1967, Smith broke two world records in one race, running 4:17.3 for the 1500 metres and 4:37.0 for the mile. These were the first 1500 m and mile world records to be ratified by the IAAF. Career Smith was born in Amersham, England. She was coached by Frank Mitchell and Gordon Pirie, Pirie had won silver in the 5000m at the Olympics in Melbourne in 1956 but Anne Smith's preferred distance, 1500m, did not become part of the Olympic Games programme for women until 1972. She had begun running as a 17-year-old and won the WAAA's 880y title four times from 1964 to 1967.
