Maria Gelhaar
Maria Albertina Gelhaar née Laurin (1858-1920) was a Swedish operatic soprano. She made her debut in September 1881 at Stockholm's Mindre teatern, Nya Teatern in Mozart's one-act opera ''Der Schauspieldirektor''. In February 1883, she appeared for the first time at the Royal Swedish Opera as Zerlina in Mozart's ''Don Giovanni''. Engaged by the company until 1888, her roles included Fiametta in Franz von Suppé's ''Boccaccio (operetta), Boccaccio'', Papagena in Mozart's ''The Magic Flute'' and Mercedes in Bizet's ''Carmen''. Biography Born in Stockholm on 4 August 1858, Maria Albertina Laurin was the daughter of the clock factory owner Carl Fredrik Laurin and his first wife Henriette née Moberg. She studied voice under Wilhelmina Gelhaar and from 1876 to 1889 under Julius Günther at the Royal College of Music, Stockholm, Royal Swedish Conservatory. ''Les deux journées, ou Le porteur d'eau'' (''The Two Days, or The Water Carrier'') is an opera in three acts by Luigi Cherubini with a libretto by Jean-Nicolas Bouilly. It takes the form of an opéra comique, meaning not that the subject matter is humorous, but that the piece is a mixture of spoken dialogue and musical numbers. Bouilly claimed he took the story from a real-life incident during the French Revolution but, for fear of censorship, he moved the action back to 1647 and the time of Cardinal Mazarin. The opera was first performed on 16 January 1800 at the Théâtre Feydeau in Paris. ''Les deux journées'' is sometimes considered Cherubini's most successful opera, though revivals have been rare in the past hundred years. Luigi Cherubini ( ; ; 8 or 14 SeptemberWillis, in Sadie (Ed.), p. 833 1760 – 15 March 1842) was an Italian Classical and Romantic composer. Daniel Auber
Daniel-François-Esprit Auber (; 29 January 178212 May 1871) was a French composer and director of the Paris Conservatoire. Born into an artistic family, Auber was at first an amateur composer before he took up writing operas professionally when the family's fortunes failed in 1820. He soon established a professional partnership with the librettist Eugène Scribe that lasted for 41 years and produced 39 operas, most of them commercial and critical successes. He is mostly associated with opéra-comique and composed 35 works in that genre. With Scribe he wrote the first French grand opera, ''La Muette de Portici'' (The Dumb Woman of Portici) in 1828, which paved the way for the large-scale works of Giacomo Meyerbeer. Giuseppe Fortunino Francesco Verdi (; 9 or 10 October 1813 – 27 January 1901) was an Italian composer best known for his operas. He was born near Busseto to a provincial family of moderate means, receiving a musical education with the help of a local patron. Verdi came to dominate the Italian opera scene after the era of Gioachino Rossini, Gaetano Donizetti, and Vincenzo Bellini, whose works significantly influenced him. ''Don César de Bazan'' is an opéra comique in four acts by Jules Massenet to a French libretto by Adolphe d'Ennery, Philippe-François Pinel "Dumanoir" and Jules Chantepie, based on the play by d'Ennery and Dumanoir, which was first performed at Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin in 1844.
