Maria Carrillo High School is a public high school in Santa Rosa, California, United States. It is managed by the Santa Rosa City Schools district. It opened in 1996 and is in Santa Rosa's Rincon Valley neighborhood. History Maria Carrillo High School opened in 1997 and is named after María Ygnacia López de Carrillo. In 2011, a YouTube video of Maria Carrillo student Kayla Kearney speaking at a Martin Luther King Jr. memorial assembly went viral after Kearney came out during her speech. Maria Carrillo High School (MCHS), a California Distinguished High School 2013, is one of five comprehensive high schools in the Santa Rosa City Schools district. North Coast Section
The North Coast Section (NCS) is a part of the California Interscholastic Federation, governing the eastern portion of the San Francisco Bay Area, up along the northern coast of the state of California, from Fremont in the south to Crescent City in the north. It also governs the private schools in the city of Oakland. Due to this split in regions, the section is split in two for some championships, including football. 2019 Major League Baseball Draft
The 2019 Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft was held from June 3 to 5, 2019. The draft assigned amateur baseball players to MLB teams. The draft order was set based on the reverse order of the 2018 MLB season standings. In addition, compensation picks were distributed for players who did not sign from the 2018 MLB Draft and for teams that lost qualifying free agents. Golden Spikes Award
The Golden Spikes Award is bestowed annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. The award, created by USA Baseball and sponsored by the Major League Baseball Players Association, was first presented in 1978. It is given to an amateur player who best exhibits and combines "exceptional on-field ability and exemplary sportsmanship". The award is considered the most prestigious in amateur baseball. Ten winners of the Golden Spikes Award are members of the National College Baseball Hall of Fame, including Bob Horner, the inaugural winner in 1978. Andrew Clayton Vaughn (born April 3, 1998) is an American professional baseball first baseman and outfielder for the Chicago White Sox of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2021. Vaughn played college baseball at California, and won the Golden Spikes Award in 2018. Amateur career Vaughn attended Maria Carrillo High School in Santa Rosa, California. Playing for the baseball team, he batted .380 with 29 doubles, three triples, one home run, 76 runs batted in (RBIs), 49 walks, and 15 strikeouts in 332 at bats. As a pitcher, he had 17–6 win–loss record with a 2.05 earned run average and 166 strikeouts. Tristan Harris () is an American technology ethicist. He is the executive director and co-founder of the Center for Humane Technology.
