Marguerite Harl
Marguerite Harl (3 April 1919 – 30 August 2020) was a French scholar, who worked on the Septuagint, Philo of Alexandria and early patristic writers such as Clement of Alexandria and Origen. She was born in Paris in April 1919 and became a pupil of Henri-Irénée Marrou. She was a professor of Ancient Greek at the Sorbonne University from 1958 to 1983. Septuagint
The Greek Old Testament, or Septuagint (, ; from the la, septuaginta, lit=seventy; often abbreviated ''70''; in Roman numerals, LXX), is the earliest extant Greek translation of books from the Hebrew Bible. It includes several books beyond those contained in the Masoretic text of the Hebrew Bible as canonically used in the tradition of mainstream Rabbinical Judaism. The additional books were composed in Greek, Hebrew, or Aramaic, but in most cases, only the Greek version has survived to the present. It is the oldest and most important complete translation of the Hebrew Bible made by the Jews. Some targums translating or paraphrasing the Bible into Aramaic were also made around the same time. The first five books of the Hebrew Bible, known as the Torah or the Pentateuch, were translated in the mid-3rd century BCE. The remaining translations are presumably from the 2nd century BCE. La Bible D'Alexandrie
''La Bible d'Alexandrie'' is a collection of fresh translations and commentaries in French devoted to the Greek Septuagint. The first volume, devoted to Genesis, was edited by Marguerite Harl in 1986. Since then another eighteen volumes have appeared, and several others await publication. The series is edited by the French publishing house, Editions du Cerf. In some respects the series responds to the earlier publication by the same publisher of the works of Philo of Alexandria. The title strictly refers to the Pentateuch only, but has been extended to the whole of the Septuagint for the purposes of this edition, which is being prepared by a team of French scholars. Bible Translations Into French
Bible translations into French date back to the Medieval era. After a number of French Bible translations in the Middle Ages, the first printed translation of the Bible into French was the work of the French theologian Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples in 1530 in Antwerp. This was substantially revised and improved in 1535 by Pierre Robert Olivétan. This Bible, in turn, became the basis of the first French Catholic Bible, published at Leuven in 1550, the work of Nicholas de Leuze and François de Larben. See also the Douay–Rheims Bible whose New Testament was published in 1582, and Old Testament, in two volumes, in 1609 and 1610 by the University of Douai. Finally, the Bible de Port-Royal, prepared by Antoine Lemaistre and his brother Louis Isaac Lemaistre, finished in 1695, achieved broad acceptance among both Catholics and Protestants.
