''Margin for Error'' is a two-act Play (theatre), play written in 1939 by Clare Boothe Luce. It is a satire of Nazism, and was staged on Broadway theatre, Broadway shortly after World War II began in Europe. The plot is a whodunit about the murder of a German Consul (representative), consul in the United States. The play was adapted as a Margin for Error, movie of the same name in 1943. History Otto Preminger directed and starred as the German consul in the Broadway production which was produced by Richard Aldrich (producer), Richard Aldrich. After a preview (theatre), preview in Princeton, New Jersey in October, the play opened on November 3, 1939, at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre, Plymouth Theatre, where it ran for 264 performances. Clare Boothe Luce ( Ann Clare Boothe; March 10, 1903 – October 9, 1987) was an American writer, politician, U.S. ambassador, and public conservative figure. A versatile author, she is best known for her 1936 hit play '' The Women'', which had an all-female cast. William B. Goetz (March 24, 1903 – August 15, 1969) was an American film producer and studio executive. Goetz was one of the founders of Twentieth Century Pictures, and later served as vice president of 20th Century Fox after the merger with the Fox Film Company.
