Vasily Filippovich Margelov (Russian language, Russian: Василий Филиппович Маргелов; be, Васі́ль Пілі́павіч Марге́лаў; – 4 March 1990) was a Red Army General of the army (USSR), General who was the commander of the Soviet Airborne Forces (VDV) from 1954 to 1959 and from 1961–1979. Margelov modernized the VDV and was a Hero of the Soviet Union. Author Carey Schofield wrote that Margelov "...is considered to be the real father of the VDV...[leading]...them through their most vital period of development." Early life Vasily Markelov (later changed to Margelov due to a spelling error) was born on 27 December 1906 in the city of Ekaterinoslav, the son of Belarusians, Belarusian immigrants Filipp Ivanovich Markelov and Agata Stepanovna. Mikhail Vitalyevich Margelov (russian: Михаил Витальевич Маргелов; born 22 December 1964), is a Russian public figure and politician, Vice President, JSC “Transneft”, and ex-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council of Russia. He has been a member of the European Democrat Group in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) from 2002 until 2009. Personal Margelov is the son of Colonel General Vitaly Vasilyevich Margelov, a politician and intelligence officer, and the grandson of General Vasily Margelov, a Hero of the Soviet Union. The Army General Margelov Medal (russian: Медаль Генерал Армии Маргелов) is an award of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation established by Order No. 182 of the Minister of Defence of the Russian Federation of 6 May 2005. It is named after the renowned past commander of Soviet Airborne Troops Army General Vasily Margelov. The medal is awarded to military and civilian personnel of the Russian Airborne Troops for good service. Award statute The Army General Margelov Medal is awarded to Russian military personnel serving in the Airborne Troops (VDV) for good service of 15 years or more if previously awarded the Decoration "For Merit" of Airborne Troops. It is also awarded to civilian personnel of the VDV for good service of more than 20 years.
