Margarita La Tornera
''Margarita la tornera'' (''Margarita the Gatekeeper'') is an opera in three acts composed by Ruperto Chapí to a libretto by Carlos Fernández Shaw, based on a dramatic poem by José Zorrilla. It premiered on 24 February 1909 at the Teatro Real in Madrid in a performance conducted by the composer. An acclaimed recording of the opera came out in 1999 with Plácido Domingo and Elisabete Matos. Background and performance history Following its initial staging, the opera languished in obscurity for many years. Finally, through the efforts of tenor Plácido Domingo, who starred in the new production, it was revived in Spain in 1999. This production was subsequently videotaped and shown on Spanish television. A CD of this revival, recorded live, was nominated for the 2003 Latin Grammy Award for Best Classical Album. Ruperto Chapí
Ruperto Chapí y Lorente (27 March 1851 – 25 March 1909) was a Spanish composer, and co-founder of the Spanish Society of Authors and Publishers. Biography Chapí was born at Villena, the son of a Valencian barber. He trained in his home town and in Madrid. He wrote many symphonic, band, choral and chamber works, as well as '' zarzuelas'' and operas, becoming, alongside Tomás Bretón, a fellow pupil of Emilio Arrieta at the Madrid Conservatory. He was one of the most popular and important composers of his time. He wrote zarzuelas in all shapes and sizes, including the three-act ''zarzuela grande'' and the one-act ''género chico'' forms. His most celebrated work is '' La revoltosa'', written in the latter style. Many of the preludes to his ''zarzuela''s (including those to ''El tambor de granaderos'' and ''La patria chica'') have remained staple items in Spanish orchestral concerts. ''Das Mirakel'' is a black-and white silent German film made and released in 1912, directed by Mime Misu for the Berlin film production company Continental-Kunstfilm GmbH. It was based (without permission) on Karl Vollmoeller's 1911 play, '' The Miracle''. The film was originally advertised as ''The Miracle'' in Britain and the US, but after copyright litigation in both countries it was shown as ''Sister Beatrix'' and ''Sister Beatrice'' respectively. In Germany it was known as ''Das Marienwunder: eine alte Legende''. The film stars Lore Giesen, Mime Misu, and Anton Ernst Rückert. The screenplay was by Mime Misu, and the cinematographer was Emil Schünemann, who was also behind the camera for Misu's film about the disaster, ''In Nacht und Eis'' (''Shipwrecked in Icebergs''). Luis Antonio García Navarro (30 April 1941 in Chiva, Valencian Community, Spain – 10 October 2001 in Madrid, Spain), was a Spanish conductor. ''The Miracle'' is a 1959 film directed by Irving Rapper and starring Carroll Baker and Roger Moore.
