Margaret Williams (film Director)
Margaret Williams is a British film and television director based in London, UK. She has directed mainly arts and music-drama films and documentaries. Career Williams directed films for the BBC, including the dance film ''Cross Channel'' in 1992. She created a number of films with choreographer Victoria Marks, including ''Mothers and Daughters'' in 1994 and later ''Outside In''. ''The Wapping Project'' organized a retrospective of Margaret’s dance films in 2007. Her dance film ''Veterans'' was performed and co-created with US Veterans from the West Los Angeles combat rehab/PTSD clinic and won First Prize, the Premi Internacional VideoDansa in Barcelona in 2009. In 2011, ''One Man Walking'', a dance film directed by Williams, was broadcast on Channel 4. The film was choreographed by Kenrick Sandy and devised with Jonzi D. Powder Her Face
''Powder Her Face'', Op. 14 (1995), is a chamber opera in two acts by the British composer Thomas Adès, with an English libretto by Philip Hensher. The opera is 100 minutes long. It was commissioned by the Almeida Opera, a part of London's Almeida Theatre, for performances at the Cheltenham Music Festival. The subject of the opera is the "Dirty Duchess", Margaret Campbell, Duchess of Argyll, whose sexual exploits were the stuff of scandal and gossip in Britain in 1963 during her divorce proceedings. The opera is explicit in its language and detail. It was first performed on 1 July 1995 in Cheltenham, with Jill Gómez in the leading role. Reviews were generally good, but the opera became notorious for its musical depiction of fellatio: British radio station Classic FM considered it unsuitable for transmission. Judith Weir
Judith Weir (born 11 May 1954) is a British composer serving as Master of the King's Music. Appointed in 2014 by Queen Elizabeth II, Weir is the first woman to hold this office. Biography Weir was born in Cambridge, England, to Scottish parents. She studied with John Tavener while at the North London Collegiate School and subsequently with Robin Holloway at King's College, Cambridge, graduating in 1976. Her music often draws on sources from medieval history, as well as the traditional stories and music of her parents' homeland, Scotland. Although she has achieved international recognition for her orchestral and chamber works, Weir is best known for her operas and theatrical works. Blond Eckbert
''Blond Eckbert'' is an opera by Scottish composer Judith Weir. The composer wrote the English-language libretto herself, basing it on the cryptic supernatural short story ''Der blonde Eckbert'' by the German Romantic writer Ludwig Tieck. Weir completed the original two-act version of the opera in 1993, making ''Blond Eckbert'' her third full-length work in the genre. Like its predecessors, it was received well by the critics. She later produced a one act "pocket" version of the work. This uses chamber forces rather than the full orchestra of the two act version and omits the chorus. The pocket version receives frequent performances, especially in Germany and Austria, while the full version is available in a recording featuring the original cast. Armida (Weir)
''Armida'' is an opera by British composer Judith Weir. It premiered on 25 December 2005 as a television broadcast on the United Kingdom, UK station, Channel 4 which had commissioned the work. The English libretto, also written by Weir, is loosely based on the story of Rinaldo and Armida, in Torquato Tasso's 1581 epic poem set in the First Crusade, ''Jerusalem Delivered, La Gerusalemme liberata'' (''Jerusalem Delivered''). Armida had been a highly popular subject for operas in the 18th and early 19th Centuries, but only rarely afterwards. In Weir's 50-minute-long opera, the setting is updated to a modern Middle-East conflict which alludes to but never specifically mentions the Iraq War.
