Margaret Pageler
Margaret Pageler is a former Seattle City Council member in Position 5 from 1992 until 2004. Early life and education Pageler was born in rural China to missionary parents. She stayed in China and Taiwan until her teens. Pageler would attend multiple schools in Illinois for college; Wheaton College for her bachelor's degree in Social Studies, Northern Illinois University for her master's in school administration, and the University of Chicago Law School. Pageler was a former schoolteacher, and after law school, she worked at the law firm Stoel Rives. Seattle City Council Elections Pageler unsuccessfully ran for city council three times in the 1980s under the progressive neighborhood group Vision Seattle. In 1991, she ran for city council to fill the seat vacated by Paul Kraabel, who was retiring. In the general election, Pageler would win with 57% of the vote to opponent, R.P. (Dick) Nelson, 43%. Seattle City Council
The Seattle City Council is the legislative body of the city of Seattle, Washington. The Council consists of nine members serving four-year terms, seven of which are elected by electoral districts and two of which are elected in citywide at-large positions; all elections are non-partisan. It has the sole responsibility of approving the city's budget, and develops laws and policies intended to promote the health and safety of Seattle's residents. Charlie Chong
Charlie Chong (October 13, 1926 – April 26, 2007) was a populist Seattle political figure and activist on behalf of the Pike Place Market and against the marginalization of West Seattle. Biography On 13 October 1926, Chong was born on the island of Maui, then part of the Territory of Hawaii (now the State of Hawaii). Chong graduated from Honolulu's St. Louis High School, and after service in the United States Army, studied at Georgetown University, where he edited the Foreign Service News Letter before receiving (in 1951) a Bachelor of Science degree in Foreign Service. He served in the United States Air Force in the Philippines, Korea, and Japan, 1951–1954. After retiring from a varied career in public service positions and the canning industry, Chong came to public notice in the mid-1980s as an advocate of tenant rights at the Pike Place Market. Teen Dance Ordinance
The Teen Dance Ordinance was a controversial Seattle law which severely curtailed the ability of concert and club promoters to hold events for underaged patrons. The organization Parents in Arms advocated for its creation. During its existence from 1985 to 2002, it was routinely criticized for its severity (often labeled "draconian") and its effects on the local music scene and industry. After several unsuccessful attempts to repeal it through lobbying and later court action, it was finally repealed and replaced with the All-ages Dance Ordinance. History From 1977 to 1985, teen dances were unregulated in Seattle. Activities at underage clubs were attracting the attention of the public and a club called The Monastery was particularly notorious for allegations of sexual abuse, child prostitution, and drug and alcohol use. Strippergate (Seattle)
Seattle's Strippergate is the name of a 2003 government scandal and criminal conspiracy masterminded by Frank Colacurcio Sr., a strip-club magnate, and Frank Colacurcio Jr., his son. Former Washington state governor Al Rosellini assisted the Colacurcios by lobbying six members of the Seattle City Council and raising funds for three of the politicians. The scandal is unrelated to the 2000 scandal in San Diego sometimes called by the same name. In June 2003, James Bush, a reporter for the '' North Seattle Sun'', reported city council members Judy Nicastro, Jim Compton and Heidi Wills received large amounts of campaign donations from the Colacurcio family and their business associates. Eventually, investigators determined the campaign contributions totaled $36,000. The prosecutor found that no councilmember, Nicastro, Wills or Compton did anything wrong.
