Mareel
Mareel is a multi-purpose entertainment venue located on the waterfront of Lerwick, the capital of Shetland. Opening in 2012, the facility includes a music venue, cinema, conference rooms and educational facilities. Facilities Mareel is designed as a multi use venue and hub for the creative industries. The site is near the new Shetland Museum and Archives in Lerwick. Shetland Arts are the lead agency behind the project, Gareth Hoskins were the architects and D.I.T.T. the building contractors. The name means "phosphorescence on the ocean". The main performance auditorium has a standing capacity of about 650 and a seated capacity of around 250, with a balcony seating a further 85 people. There are 2 screening areas. The main cinema has a seated capacity of around 160 with a smaller second cinema seating around 40. The recording studio has a control room and live area. Gwilym Gibbons
Gwilym Meredith Lloyd Gibbons, (born 8 April 1971) is a British arts leader who is notable for leading the political struggle, fundraising and development of the £13.5m Mareel in Shetland, the UK's most northerly music, cinema and creative industries centre. Mareel officially opened in November 2012, 18 months behind schedule and £1.5 million over budget after a protracted dispute with the main contractors. He was the first director of Shetland Arts Development Agency, leaving after 8 years in post in September 2014 to set up Creative Help, a new consultancy agency. Gibbons was also one of the nine inaugural board members of Creative Scotland. He was made an honorary fellow of the University of the Highlands and Islands in September 2014 for his outstanding contribution to the arts and education. Garrison Theatre
The Garrison Theatre is a 280-capacity venue in Lerwick, Shetland, Scotland, with a sprung proscenium stage with fixed raked seating. The auditorium has 19 rows, named A to S, with 8, 12, 13, 15, or 16 seats in each row. The venue hosts dance, drama, stand-up comedy, pantomime and music productions. Shetland Arts
Shetland Arts Development Agency or Shetland Arts for short, is a Scottish charity formed in 2006 (to replace the Shetland Arts Trust) with a remit to "encourage and assist in promoting and advancing the creation, practice and presentation and study of all forms of art - visual, performing and creative." The organisation, based in Mareel, manage the Weisdale Mill (an art gallery, museum and cafe), the Garrison Theatre and the Mareel cinema, music and education venue. Music is an important aspect of their work and the "Fiddle Frenzy" traditional music summer school and cultural event is now in its fifth year, the 2008 event building on earlier successes. Gareth Hoskins
Gareth Dale Hoskins OBE (15 April 1967 – 9 January 2016) was a Scottish architect. Biography Born in Edinburgh on 15 April 1967, Hoskins attended George Watson’s College and the Mackintosh School of Architecture at the Glasgow School of Art. He joined Penoyre & Prasad in 1992 before starting his own firm in 1998. In 2000, ''Building Design'' gave Hoskins its Young Architect of the Year Award. In 2005 he was appointed to the Board of Architecture + Design Scotland where he served as Scottish Healthcare Design Champion for 4 years from 2006. He was named UK Architect of the Year in 2006 and Scottish Architect of the Year three years later. In 2010, he was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire for services to architecture. The National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) caters for students aged between 8 and 25, through orchestras, jazz bands, training ensembles and outreach programmes.
