Marcus Eli Ravage
Marcus Eli Ravage (Revici) (June 25, 1884, Bârlad, Romania – October 6, 1965, Grasse, France) was a Jewish American immigrant writer who wrote many books and articles about immigration in America and Europe between the world wars. Best known for his autobiographical book ''An American in the Making'' (1917), he is also known for his 1928 article, "A Real Case Against the Jews,” a satirical attack on antisemitism. He was also a biographer of the Rothschild family, as well as of Napoleon's second wife, Marie Louise. In addition to his longer works, he served as European correspondent for The Nation, and wrote for both Harper’s Magazine and The New Republic. His articles "A real case against the Jews" and "Commissary to the Gentiles", published in the January and February 1928 issues of ''Century Magazine'', were apparently translated as "a devastating admission" first in the '' Czernowitz Allgemeine Zeitung'' on September 2, 1933. Bârlad
Bârlad () is a city in Vaslui County, Romania. It lies on the banks of the river Bârlad, which waters the high plains of Western Moldavia. At Bârlad the railway from Iași diverges, one branch skirting the river Siret, the other skirting the Prut; both reunite at Galați. Along with a maze of narrow and winding streets, Bârlad features several notable modern buildings, including the hospital administered by the Saint Spiridion Foundation of Iași. In the vicinity of the city are the ruins of a Roman camp. The city is the birthplace of Romanian ''Domnitor'' (Ruler) and diplomat Alexandru Ioan Cuza. Etymology Scholars continue to debate the origin of the city's name. Maurice Samuel
Maurice Samuel (February 8, 1895 – May 4, 1972) was a Romanian-born British and American novelist, translator and lecturer of Jewish heritage. Biography Born in Măcin, Tulcea County, Romania, to Isaac Samuel and Fanny Acker, Samuel moved to Paris with his family at the age of five and about a year later to England, where he studied at the Victoria University. His parents spoke Yiddish at home and he developed strong attachments to the Jewish people and the Yiddish language at early age. This later became the motivation for many of the books he wrote as an adult. Eventually, Samuel left England and emigrated to the United States, settling in New York City's Lower East Side. He served in the United States Army during World War I. A Jewish intellectual and writer, Samuel is best known for his book '' You Gentiles'', published in 1924. ''Germany Must Perish!'' is a 104-page book written by Theodore N. Kaufman, which he self-published in 1941 in the United States. The book advocated the sterilization of all Germans and the territorial dismemberment of Germany, believing that this would achieve world peace. Kaufman founded the Argyle Press in Newark, New Jersey, United States, in order to publish this book. He was the sole proprietor of the Argyle Press, which is not known to have published any other works. The Nazi Party used the book, written by a Jewish author, to support their argument that Jews were plotting against their country. Samuel Roth
Samuel Roth (1893–1974) was an American publisher and writer. Described as an "all-around schemer", he was the plaintiff in ''Roth v. United States'' (1957). The case was a Supreme Court ruling on freedom of sexual expression and whose minority opinion, regarding redeeming social value as a criterion in obscenity prosecutions, became a template for the liberalizing First Amendment decisions in the 1960s. Roth spent nine years in jail on state and federal obscenity convictions. These include eight years in Lewisburg Federal Penitentiary: from 1936 to 1939, and 1957 to 1961.
