Marconi Trail
The Marconi Trail is a scenic roadway in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. Located in eastern Cape Breton Island, the route is entirely within the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and runs from Louisbourg to Glace Bay along the island's eastern coast. The Glace Bay terminus is at the Marconi National Historic Site, which marks the location of the first radio transmission from North America to Europe, made by Guglielmo Marconi in 1902. The Marconi Trail measures approximately in length. Mira Gut Bridge Macroni Trail crossed the Mira River along Mira Bay Drive at the community of Mira Gut along the 140-year-old ''Mira Gut Bridge''. In 2017, the structure was demolished after it was deemed unsafe. A replacement bridge is slated to be open in 2022, but in the meantime travelers must take a detour along Brickyard Road and Hornes Road ( Route 255), crossing the Mira River along Trunk 22 at Albert Bridge. Louisbourg
Louisbourg is an unincorporated community and former town in Cape Breton Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia. History The French military founded the Fortress of Louisbourg in 1713 and its fortified seaport on the southwest part of the harbour, naming it in honour of Louis XIV. The harbour had been used by European mariners since at least the 1590s, when it was known as English Port and Havre à l'Anglois, the French settlement that dated from 1713. The settlement was burned the first day the British landed during the Siege of Louisbourg (1745). The French were terrorized and abandoned the Grand Battery, which the British occupied the following day. It was returned to France in 1748 but recaptured by the British in 1758. After the capture in 1758, its fortifications were demolished in 1760 and the town-site abandoned by British forces in 1768. Little Lorraine
Little Lorraine is a small village located on the east coast of Cape Breton Island, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada. It is known to have had several different names in the past such as Little Loran, Lorembec, Cap-de-Lorembec, Petit Laurenbec and between 1750-51 Petit Lorembec was in use. In a 1756 census, there were 22 families living in Little Lorraine – all in the fishery business. It was founded in 1714 and has a population of approximately 62 people. The Irish immigrant sailing shi''Astraea''ran aground at night May 8, 1834, in Lorraine Head. Port Caledonia
Port Caledonia (also known as Big Glace Bay) is a small community in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the Cape Breton Regional Municipality on Cape Breton Island. It is located on the Donkin Highway, between the town of Glace Bay and the village of Donkin. It currently has one gas station/convenience store as well as a public beach, known as the Big Glace Bay Beach. Donkin, Nova Scotia
Donkin is a Canadian rural village with a population of 532 as of Canada 2021 Census, 2021. Located on the picturesque coastline of Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, it is a part of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The smaller communities of Port Caledonia and Schooner Pond are directly adjacent to the village proper, connected by a single strip of road called the Donkin Highway. Port Morien
Port Morien (also referred to as "Morien") is a small fishing community of 700 people in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, located in the southeastern Cape Breton Island near the rural community Donkin, and six miles from the town of Glace Bay. Name Port Morien was first recorded as "Baie de Mordienne" on a map in 1580. In the nineteenth century, it was renamed Cow Bay by settlers. A cow allegedly escaped from a vessel when being transported from Sydney to Louisbourg and was found in the area. In 1895, its name was changed to Port Morien. Albert Bridge, Nova Scotia
Albert Bridge (2001 pop.: 159) is a Canadian rural community in Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Regional Municipality. Situated on the Mira River (Nova Scotia), Mira River, the community was previously named Mira Ferry for the location of a small ferry crossing the river. It received its present name after Albert Munro, the son of William Henry Munro, Nova Scotia's representative in the British Parliament who used his influence to have the ferry replaced with a bridge in 1849.
