''March 1963'' is an album by folk and blues musician John Koerner, released in 2010. History Following a ten-hour studio session with friends Dave Ray and Tony Glover on March 24, 1963, for the album '' Blues, Rags and Hollers'', Koerner did a set at a local folk club and then an interview and performance for a Milwaukee radio station. Producer Mark Trehus acquired the tape of the radio performance several decades later. "Just the idea that there was unreleased recordings, by the guy I consider to be possibly the greatest living practitioner of American folk music in America today, was just exciting beyond belief for me," Trehus said. Mark Trehus, owner of the Minneapolis record store Treehouse Records and a longtime fan of Koerner, released the album on his label Nero's Neptune Records, along with a CD reissue of Koerner and Willie Murphy's 1972 album ''Music Is Just a Bunch of Notes'' which included a video of Koerner's experimental film ''The Secret of Sleep''. John Koerner
"Spider" John Koerner (born August 31, 1938, in Rochester, New York, United States) is an American guitarist, singer, and songwriter. He is best known as a guitarist and vocalist in the blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover, with Dave Ray and Tony Glover. He has also made albums as a solo performer and with Willie Murphy. Biography Koerner grew up in Rochester, New York, and after a brief military service attended the University of Minnesota. He intended to major in engineering but soon became involved in the Minneapolis music scene, where he met Dave Ray and Tony Glover. They formed a loose-knit trio, releasing albums under the name Koerner, Ray & Glover. The group gained notice with their first album, '' Blues, Rags and Hollers'', originally released by Audiophile in 1963 and re-released by Elektra Records later that year. Blues is a music genre and musical form which originated in the Deep South of the United States around the 1860s. History The 400 Bar, in the West Bank district of Minneapolis, Minnesota, was one of the venues where both John Koerner and Tony Glover played in their early days as part of Koerner, Ray & Glover. In an interview with the Minneapolis newspaper the Star Tribune, Glover said, "We started at the Triangle Bar, and John (Koerner) would go across the street to the Viking Bar during our breaks, so we eventually started playing at the Viking. The same thing happened between the Viking and the 400 Bar. We sort of kept moving to the places John liked to go to enjoy a quiet beer." Tony Glover
David Curtis Glover (October 7, 1939 – May 29, 2019), better known as Tony "Little Sun" Glover, was an American blues musician and music critic. He was a harmonica player and singer associated with "Spider" John Koerner and Dave "Snaker" Ray during the early 1960s folk revival. Together, the three released albums under the name Koerner, Ray & Glover. Glover was also the author of diverse "harp" (blues harmonica) songbooks and a co-author, along with Ward Gaines and Scott Dirks, of an award-winning biography of Little Walter, ''Blues with a Feeling: The Little Walter Story''. Biography Glover was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1939. As a teenager he performed in various local bands, playing guitar before taking up the blues harp. ''Blues, Rags and Hollers'' is the first album by the American country blues trio Koerner, Ray & Glover, released in 1963. History The first album of the country blues trio from Minneapolis, Minnesota, had Tony "Little Sun" Glover on harmonica, "Spider" John Koerner on guitar and vocals, and Dave "Snaker" Ray on guitar and vocals. Koerner, Ray & Glover were part of the revival of folk music and blues in the 1960s. Willie Murphy (November 17, 1943 – January 13, 2019) was an American pianist, singer, producer, and songwriter. He is known for his solo work as a singer and pianist; as a singer, bassist and guitarist for the blues band Willie and the Bees; and for his collaborations with Bonnie Raitt and John Koerner. Early life Murphy was born and grew up in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, in an Irish Catholic working-class family. He began piano lessons at the age of 4. His early musical influences were Little Richard, Fats Domino, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Ray Charles. Career Murphy played on the folk circuit with John Koerner, and the duo recorded ''Running, Jumping, Standing Still'' in 1969. ''Music Is Just a Bunch of Notes'' is an album by blues artists "Spider" John Koerner and Willie and the Bumblebees, released in 1972. It was reissued in 2010 by Nero's Neptune Records along with a movie Koerner made titled ''The Secret of Sleep''. "Macalester Don't Stop Now 10-Mar-72" was recorded live by Koerner, Dave Ray, and Bonnie Raitt at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota on March 10, 1972. "Waiting for Go with Normal Dub" was recorded live in Minneapolis, Minnesota outside of Tom Olson's house. The album had a plain white cover that was rubber stamped by hand, making each one unique. This included one that said "also on side two: Everybody's Going For the Money", which had been left off of the label. Early copies had a serial number alá the Beatles' White Album.
