Marcelino Baca
Marcelino Baca (c. 1808 – 21 February 1862) was a 19th-century Mexican fur trader who helped to establish the fur trade in the American Southwest. Early life Baca was born in Taos, New Mexico to Mexican parents, a background which he allegedly despised. Trapper career Baca spent around 9 years trapping on the Upper Missouri. By 1935, he was trapping with Jim Bridger in the Rocky Mountains. In February 1837, Baca was shot in the heel by a Blackfoot while protecting a trappers fort, but survived the incident. Post–trapping After the decline of beaver trapping in the middle of the century, Baca settled down with his family near El Pueblo and began cattle ranching. The Battle of Valverde, also known as the Battle of Valverde Ford, was fought from February 20 to 21, 1862, near the town of Val Verde at a ford of the Rio Grande in Union-held New Mexico Territory, in what is today the state of New Mexico. It is considered a major Confederate success in the New Mexico Campaign of the American Civil War, despite the invading force abandoning the field and, eventually, retreating from the territory entirely. 1st Regiment New Mexico Volunteer Cavalry
The 1st Regiment New Mexico Cavalry was a volunteer cavalry regiment in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Service Civil War In August 1861, Ceran St. Vrain and Kit Carson organized the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Infantry Regiment. This regiment fought at the battle of Valverde. On March 31, 1862, the 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th New Mexico Infantry Regiments were consolidated to form the 1st New Mexico Volunteer Cavalry Regiment with Kit Carson as colonel. The regiment was dispersed throughout the Department of New Mexico stationed at various frontier forts: Stanton, Goodwin, McRae, Wingate, Craig, Canby, Sumner, Marcy, Bascom, Union, and other points in that department, during entire term of service. Charles Autobees
Charles Autobees (1812–1882), whose last name was also spelled Urtebise and Ortivis, was a fur trader and pioneer in the American Old West. He was the founder of Autobees, Colorado. Early life Charles Autobees was born in St. Louis in 1812 to Francis Autobees and Sarah T. Tate. Francis was French-Canadian and may have had Native American heritage as well. After Francis drowned in the Saint Lawrence River while logging, Sarah married Bartholomew Tobin, who was living in St. Louis. Sarah and Bartholomew had another son, Thomas Tate Tobin. Hardscrabble, Colorado
Hardscrabble was a settlement established by traders and trappers in the 1840s near the fork of Adobe and Hardscrabble Creeks in present-day Fremont County, Colorado. It was called ''San Buenaventura de los Tres Arrollos''—for three creeks Newlin, Adobe, and Hardscrabble—by its founders, George Simpson, Joseph Doyle, and Alexander Barclay. The name Hardscrabble became more common. It was built on the former site of a Bent brothers trading post and near the Fort Le Duc trading post. Houses were built together to form a square, as a protection from attack by Arapaho and Ute people. Teresita Sandoval lived at Hardscrabble beginning in 1844. Fort Laramie
Fort Laramie (founded as Fort William and known for a while as Fort John) was a significant 19th-century trading-post, diplomatic site, and military installation located at the confluence of the Laramie and the North Platte rivers. South Platte

Pawnee People
The Pawnee are a Central Plains Indian tribe that historically lived in Nebraska and northern Kansas but today are based in Oklahoma.
