Marcel Schelbert (born 26 February 1976) is a retired Swiss athlete who specialized in the 400 metres hurdles The 400 metres hurdles is a track and field hurdling event. The event has been on the Olympic athletics programme since 1900 for men and since 1984 for women. On a standard outdoor track, 400 metres is the length of the inside lane, once a .... His personal best time of 48.13 seconds, achieved when he won the bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships, is also a Swiss record. He also won a bronze medal at the 1999 Summer Universiade. For these feats he was given the ''Swiss Sportsman of the Year Award'' the same year. Schelbert retired in 2003, and now works in a bank. |

Athletics At The 2001 Summer Universiade
At the 2001 Summer Universiade, the athletics events were held in Beijing, People's Republic of China between 27 August and 1 September. A total of 45 events were contested, of which 23 by male and 22 by female athletes. The host country, China, took the most gold medals (9) and the most medals overall (16). The United States were a close second with a total of 8 golds. Five Universiade records were broken during the course of the athletics competition. Amongst the gold medallists for the host country were Dong Yanmei, who won golds in the women's 5000 and 10,000 metres races, and 18-year-old Liu Xiang in the 110 metres hurdles. It was Liu's first gold on a world stage and he became the 2004 Olympic champion in world record time three years later. The Athletics Tournament at the 1999 Summer Universiade took place in the new Estadio Son Moix in Palma de Mallorca, Spain from July 4 to July 9, 1999. Five Universiade records were set. A total of 23 men's and 22 women's events were contested (the programme remaining identical to the previous edition with steeplechase being for men only). The United States topped the athletics medal table (as it did in 1997) with a total of 25 medals, twelve of them gold. Romania and Cuba were the next strongest nations, with six and five gold medals respectively. Romania was the only other nation to reach double figures in the medal tally. The host nation, Spain, won six medals. A total of 38 nations reached the medal table.
