Marc Van Der Linden
Marc Angéle Vanderlinden or ''van der Linden'' (born 4 February 1964 in Merksem) is a Belgian former footballer. He began his career with his local side SC Merksem before moving to Royal Antwerp FC in 1982. After seven seasons with the club he moved to R.S.C. Anderlecht in 1989 before joining K.A.A. Gent two years later. In 1995, he moved to Israel to play for Ironi Rishon LeZion and then Maccabi Herzliya before returning to his original club in 1997. Van der Linden continued to play for Merksem until 2002 when he retired. He also played 19 times for the Belgium national football team, scoring nine goals and appearing in the 1990 FIFA World Cup. Merksem
Merksem (; former spelling: ''Merxem'') is a district of the municipality and city of Antwerp in the Flemish Region of Belgium. It has 44,808 inhabitants as of 2021. History The history of Merksem goes back to Gallo-Roman times. During that period the region was mentioned as ''Merk'' (border) and ''Heim'' (settlement) being part of the diocese Kamerijk. Merksem has for centuries been part of a larger community together with Schoten and Sint-Job-in-'t-Goor. During the Spanish period Merksem used to be a Dominium, a known ''Lord of Mercxem'' is Anthony van Stralen. In the 16th century Merksem was separated from Schoten. Middle Ages Around the year 600, the Franks started colonizing the area near the local Saint-Bartholomew's Church, which was the highest point of Merksem at the time. 1990 FIFA World Cup Qualification
The qualification competition for the 1990 FIFA World Cup was a series of tournaments organised by the six FIFA confederations. Each confederation — the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), Confederation of African Football (CAF), CONCACAF (North America), CONMEBOL (South America), Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), and UEFA (Europe) — was allocated a certain number of the 24 places at the tournament. A total of 116 teams entered the competition, with Italy, as the host, and Argentina, as the holders, qualifying for the final tournament automatically. The first qualification match was played on 17 April 1988 and qualification concluded on 19 November 1989.
