Marathon Artists
Marathon Artists is a London-based independent record label founded by Paul-René Albertini, Philippe Ascoli and Jimmy Mikaoui in 2012. The label also runs its own publishing and management divisions. Artists on the label include Courtney Barnett, Pond, Hazel English, Childhood, Max Jury, Sonia Stein, Jamie Isaac, Tiny Ruins, Baaba Maal, Shock Machine, Afro B, Alaskalaska and Jen Cloher. Marathon Artists is also home to imprint labels House Anxiety, MOVES and Mahogany Records. House Anxiety launched in 2008, with releases from King Krule to Forth Wanderers, Childhood to The Big Pink. As of 2018, the label both developed future Marathon Artists signings, as well as maintained its own roster of artists. MOVES launched in 2017 with the release of the first official UK Afrobeats compilation, MOVES: The Sound of UK Afrobeats. Jen Cloher
Jen Cloher (born 9 October 1973) is an Australian singer, songwriter, and record producer, currently based in Melbourne, Victoria. Cloher's 2017 self-titled fourth studio album peaked at number 5 on the ARIA Charts. From 2006 to 2010, Cloher recorded and toured with her band Jen Cloher and the Endless Sea and since 2013 has released with Mia Dyson and Liz Stringer music under the name Dyson Stringer Cloher. Career Originally from Adelaide, Cloher moved to Sydney and studied at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA). Whilst studying, Cloher lived in a share house with several musicians, which is when she bought her first second-hand guitar, and started to write songs. ''Music Week'' is a trade publication for the UK record industry distributed via a website and a monthly print magazine. It is published by Future. History Founded in 1959 as '' Record Retailer'', it relaunched on 18 March 1972 as ''Music Week''. James Michael Bay (born 4 September 1990) is an English singer-songwriter and guitarist. In 2014, he released his single "Hold Back the River (James Bay song), Hold Back the River", which was certified platinum, before releasing his debut studio album ''Chaos and the Calm'' (2014). Mahogany Sessions is a London-based YouTube channel founded in 2009. The channel has hosted performances from artists including Billy Lockett, Rhye, Jack Garrett, Laura Marling and Roo Panes. History Mahogany originally started as a WordPress-based music blog in February 2009. ‘The Mahogany Blog’ gained an online following and a year later on 1 July 2010, ‘The Mahogany Sessions’ YouTube channel was launched. Skengdo x AM, whose real names are Terrell Doyley and Joshua Malinga, respectively, are a British hip hop duo from Brixton, London. They are both members of the UK drill group and alleged gang, 410, which is known to have conflict with neighbouring Harlem Spartans, based in Kennington. The duo gained some media attention in 2019 where they were handed a suspended jail sentence due to performing a song that police alleged encouraged gang violence. Harlem Spartans, often abbreviated to HS, also known as Harlem O or simply Harlem, is a British hip hop collective based in Kennington, London. Members of Harlem Spartans have acquired over 100 million streams through their music. The name, "Harlem", is a nickname for their local area of Kennington. The police allege that Harlem Spartans is a gang, however this is denied by the group. Harlem Spartans is affiliated with Walworth-based group Moscow17. Afrobeats
Afrobeats (not to be confused with Afrobeat or Afroswing), or Afro-pop or Afro-fusion (or Afropop or Afrofusion), is an umbrella term to describe popular music from West Africa and the diaspora that initially developed in Nigeria, Ghana, and the UK in the 2000s and 2010s. Afrobeats is less of a style per se, and more of a descriptor for the fusion of sounds flowing out of Ghana and Nigeria. Genres such as hiplife, jùjú music, highlife and naija beats, among others, were amalgamated under the 'Afrobeats' umbrella. Afrobeats is primarily produced in Lagos, Accra, and London.
