Marang (district)
The Marang District is a coastal district in Terengganu, Malaysia. The district seat is the town of Marang. The districts that border Marang are Kuala Terengganu and Kuala Nerus to the north, Hulu Terengganu in the west, while Dungun is in the south. The eastern part of the district is a stretch of coastline facing the South China Sea. Etymology The origin of the district's name is attributed to a Chinese entrepreneur of dried sea products known only by the name of Ma ( 馬, literally horses), who was one of the first settlers in the area. The sea products, consisting of fish and squid, are dried on racks called ''rang'' by the local populace. Given Ma owned all the ''rangs'', the area became known as Ma rang (i.e. 'Ma's ''rangs), which eventually became Marang. Marang (est. pop. (2000 census): 4,896) is a town and the seat of Marang District, in the state of Terengganu, Malaysia. The town is located on the South China Sea coast on the main highway between Kuala Terengganu and Kuantan. The main economic activity in Marang is fishery and tourism. Etymology The origin of the district's name is attributed to a Chinese entrepreneur of dried sea products known only by the name of Ma, who was one of the first settlers in the area. ''Artocarpus odoratissimus'' is a species of flowering plant in the Moraceae family. It is a commonly called marang, madang, timadang, terap, tarap, kiran, green pedalai, or johey oak. It is native to Borneo, Palawan, and Mindanao Island, and is closely related to the jackfruit, cempedak, and breadfruit trees which all belong to the same genus, ''Artocarpus''. Description ''Artocarpus odoratissimus'' is an evergreen tree growing to tall. The leaves are 16–50 cm long and 11–28 cm broad, similar to the Breadfruit's, but are a little less lobed. Many trees lose the leaf lobing once mature. Fruit As indicated by the scientific name, the fruit has a strong scent, and is considered superior in flavour to both jackfruit and cempedak. The scent reminds some of the durian but is not so intense, and is in the thick skin and not the fruit pulp. The pungent scent (almost chemical like scent) is in the outer rind. Mercy Akuot Marang is a South Sudanese social activist and singer. She currently lives in Kenya. Biography She was born in South Sudan and hails from the Dinka community of South Sudan. She performed well in school and aspired to become a lawyer. Mercy escaped from her parents at the age of just 15 when her parents willfully forced her to marry her own uncle who was much older than her. She left South Sudan in 2008 and initially got asylum in Uganda. However, her 56 year old uncle tracked her location in Kampala and she revealed that she had suffered physical violence, rape and unlawful detention from him. She later moved to Kenya in 2015 after escaping from her uncle and was admitted as an immigrant in the Kakuma Refugee camp in Kenya.
