Mapsos
Koutalas ( el, Κουταλάς) is a rural village and a community in southern Corinthia, Greece. It is part of the municipal unit of Tenea. In 2011 its population was 215 for the village, and 746 for the community. The community consists of the villages Koutalas, Mapsos (pop. 174) and Spathovouni (pop. 357). Koutalas is situated on a hillside, 3 km northwest of Chiliomodi, 5 km northeast of Agios Vasileios and 14 km southwest of Corinth. 2007 Greek Forest Fires
The 2007 Greek forest fires were a series of massive forest fires that broke out in several areas across Greece throughout the summer of 2007. The most destructive and lethal infernos broke out on 23 August, expanded rapidly and raged out of control until 27 August, until they were finally put out in early September. The fires mainly affected western and southern Peloponnese as well as southern Euboea. The death toll in August alone stood at 67 people. In total 84 people lost their lives because of the fires, including several fire fighters. Some of these firestorms are believed to be the result of arson while others were merely the result of negligence. Hot temperatures, including three consecutive heat waves of over 40 °C (105 °F), and severe drought rendered the 2007 summer unprecedented in modern Greek history. Tenea
Tenea ( el, Τενέα) is a municipal unit within the municipality of Corinth, Corinthia, Peloponnese, Greece. The municipal unit has an area of . Until 2011, it was a municipality whose seat was in Chiliomodi. The modern city is named after ancient Tenea, established approximately SE of Corinth and NE of Mycenae shortly after the Trojan War. According to Pausanias, Tenea's founders were Trojan prisoners of war whom Agamemnon had allowed to build their own town. The name Tenea is styled upon Tenedos, the founders' home town, whose mythological eponym was the hero Tenes. Tenea and Rome, according to Virgil's Aeneid, had in the years following the Trojan War produced citizens of Trojan ancestry. Chiliomodi ( el, Χιλιομόδι) is a village in eastern Corinthia, Peloponnese, Greece. It was the seat of the municipality of Tenea. Chiliomodi is situated in a valley, 3 km southeast of Koutalas, 5 km west of Athikia, 21 km southwest of Corinth and 43 km northeast of Argos. It is on the Greek National Road 7 (Corinth – Argos – Tripoli – Kalamata) and on the railway from Corinth to Kalamata. Chiliomodi has several schools, shops and a church. Agios Vasileios ( el, Άγιος Βασίλειος meaning Saint Basil) is a village in the municipal unit of Tenea in Corinthia, Greece. It is located about 25 km to the south of the city of Corinth, approximately halfway along the old national road to Argos ( GR-7). It lies at the foot of the Dafnias mountains and the Chouni Pass. Historical population Historical overview Prehistory Archaeological excavations prove that the area around Ayios Vasilios has been settled since pre-historical times. Zygouries, west of Ayios Vasilios, was excavated by the American archaeologist Carl William Blegen in the 1920s. He found a Bronze Age settlement dating from approximately 1300 BC to 1320 BC. Sadly, agricultural work and forestry on Zygouries hill has destroyed one of the most important pre-historical settlements of the Balkans.
