Maple Leaf Mills Silos
Maple Leaf Mills Silos was one of two silo or grain elevator complexes that were built in the area between Spadina Quay and Maple Leaf Quay, on Toronto Harbour, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It was one of three "monumental" silo complexes that dominated the city's waterfront. Built in 1928, the silos marked an age when goods were being shipped into Toronto. Towards the end, the silos also marked the port's decline and the desire to remove the industrial eyesore along Toronto's waterfront. They were demolished in 1983. The silos were located south of Queens Quay on Maple Leaf Quay, between the Peter Street and Rees Street slips. A silo (from the Greek σιρός – ''siros'', "pit for holding grain") is a structure for storing bulk materials. Silos are used in agriculture to store fermented feed known as silage, not to be confused with a grain bin, which is used to store grains. Silos are commonly used for bulk storage of grain, coal, cement, carbon black, woodchips, food products and sawdust. Cavan Monaghan (known as Cavan-Millbrook-North Monaghan until 2007) is a township in Peterborough County in central-eastern Ontario, Canada, southwest of the city of Peterborough. History The original townships of Cavan and Monaghan were surveyed by John Deyell in 1817, and were named after County Cavan and County Monaghan in Ireland, from which many of its settlers had emigrated. HTO Park (stylized as HTO) is an urban beach in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, that opened in 2007. It is located west of Harbourfront Centre, on Lake Ontario. History The park is built on quays once used by ships berthing in Toronto's Inner Harbour. The park consists of two sections: * HTO Park West is built on the eastern half of Maple Leaf Quay * HTO Park East is built on the old Peter Street Slip The two quays are concrete man-made infill during the 1920s with the project completed by 1929. The eastern portion was home to Maple Leaf Mills Silos until 1983. The western half was home to a smaller industrial business with a small office structure. Canada Malting Silos
Canada Malting Silos is one of two remaining silos in Toronto's Harbourfront in Ontario, Canada. Located at the foot of Bathurst Street at Bathurst Quay (Eireann Quay), the silos were built in 1928 to store malt for the Canada Malting Company. It was an important work of industrial architecture, as grain elevators had long been built out of wood, and thus were at great danger of fire. The concrete malting towers were an innovation, and the stark functionalism of the prominent building was an early influence on modernist architecture. A round office was added in 1944 and glass office was built in the original construction in 1928. The main silos, 15 in all, are 120 feet (37 meters) high and additional storage bins built in 1944 are 150 feet (46 meters) high. Victory Soya Mills Silos
Victory Soya Mills Silos are abandoned soybean storage silos in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The silos are located at the east end of Toronto Harbour, part of a soybean processing facility that operated from 1944 until 1991. The silos are of two remaining silos from Toronto's industrial port era. History The silos were built for Canadian Breweries' soya processing plant in 1944. The silos were used to store the soybeans reprocessed for a variety of purposes (pet food, animal feed, vegetable oils, etc...). In 1954 the mills were sold to Procter & Gamble and named Victory Soya Mills. It was purchased by Central Soy Incorporated in 1980 and renamed Central Soya Mills in the 1980s. Port Colborne is a city in Ontario, Canada that is located on Lake Erie, at the southern end of the Welland Canal, in the Niagara Region of Southern Ontario.
