Maple is an unincorporated community in Bailey County, Texas, United States. According to the ''Handbook of Texas'', the community had an estimated population of 75 in 2000. Geography Maple is located along FM 596 in southern Bailey County, about southwest of Muleshoe, south of Lariat, north of Virginia City, and northwest of Lubbock. History Named for early settler Maple Wilson, the community was established during the early 1920s. At that time, local ranches were subdivided into farms. A post office opened in 1926. By 1940, Maple had a population of around 600 with six businesses. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the community slowly declined. In 1980, around 130 people lived in Maple. Muleshoe, Texas
Muleshoe is a city in Bailey County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1913, when the Pecos and Northern Texas Railway built an line from Farwell, Texas, to Lubbock through northern Bailey County. In 1926, Muleshoe was incorporated. Its population was 5,158 at the 2010 census. The county seat of Bailey County, it is home to the National Mule Memorial. The Muleshoe Heritage Center, located off the combined U.S. Routes 70 and 84, is a popular museum that commemorates the importance of ranching to West Texas. The complex has several unique buildings originally from Bailey County that display the living conditions of the area from the late 19th to the mid-20th centuries. History ''The Lubbock Avalanche'' was founded in 1900 by John James Dillard and Thad Tubbs. Virginia City, Texas
Virginia City is a ghost town in southwest Bailey County, Texas, United States. It was located 2 miles southeast of the present intersection of Farm Roads 298 and 1731 in southwest Bailey County, 25 miles southwest of Muleshoe. It was platted on March 13, 1909, by Matthew C. Vaughn and Samuel D. McCloud. The original townsite called for a lot reserved for a courthouse and others for schools, churches, and a park. The same year it was platted, an Iowa land company bought the site and advertised for prospective buyers. A hotel was built to house visitors, and several stores were established. A roadbed for a railroad was graded through the town, although whether the construction was genuine or merely a speculation trick was disputed. The venture failed, and the town was abandoned by 1913.
