Manuel Piñero
Manuel Piñero Sánchez (born 1 September 1952) is a Spanish professional golfer. Piñero was born in Badajoz. He turned professional in 1968 and established himself on the European Tour in the early 1970s. He won nine titles on the Tour, the most prestigious of them the 1977 British PGA Championship. He featured in the top ten on the European Tour Order of Merit five times, including back to back fourth places in 1976 and 1977. Piñero was with Bing Crosby when Crosby died. On 14 October 1977, Piñero teamed up with Crosby in a recreational match against fellow Spanish pro Valentín Barrios and his amateur partner Cesar de Zulueta, owner of Moraleja Golf Course, where the match was played. Shortly after the match ended Crosby had a heart attack at the edge of the clubhouse and died instantaneously. Piñero played for Europe in two Ryder Cups. Badajoz
Badajoz (; formerly written ''Badajos'' in English) is the capital of the Province of Badajoz in the autonomous community of Extremadura, Spain. It is situated close to the Portuguese border, on the left bank of the river Guadiana. The population in 2011 was 151,565. Madrid Open (golf)
The Madrid Open was an annual men's golf tournament which was held in and around the Spanish capital Madrid from 1968 to 2007, apart from a seven-year gap from 1994 to 2000. It was an official money event on the European Tour since the tour's first official season in 1972 until 2007. Spain was the only country other than the UK which hosted more than one event in 1972, the other tournament in the country being the Spanish Open. The tournament has had several sponsored names over the years. In 2006 the tournament moved to a new slot and was played the same September week as the 16-man HSBC World Match Play Championship. Tony Johnstone
Anthony Alastair Johnstone (born 2 May 1956) is a Zimbabwean professional golfer. Early life Johnstone was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. He attended Christian Brothers College. Professional career In 1979, Johnstone turned professional and has spent his career playing mainly on the Southern African Tour and the European Tour. He won six times in Europe and finished a career best seventh on the European Tour Order of Merit in 1992. His most prestigious win came at the 1992 British PGA Championship. He won seventeen times on the Southern African Tour and topped the tour's Order of Merit in 1988–89 and 1993–94. He has represented Zimbabwe in international competition many times. Antonio Garrido (golfer)
Antonio Garrido (born 2 February 1944) is a Spanish professional golfer. He won five times on the European Tour and twice on the European Senior Tour. He played in the 1979 Ryder Cup, the first Ryder Cup in which Continental European golfers were eligible to play. Professional career Garrido played on the European Tour from its first official season in 1972 and won five tournaments between 1972 and 1986. He is notable for winning the first ever official European Tour event, the 1972 Spanish Open. His best year was 1977 when he won the Madrid Open and the Benson & Hedges International Open and finished third on the Order of Merit. Des Smyth
Desmond John Smyth (born 12 February 1953) is an Irish professional golfer. He won eight times on the European Tour between 1979 and 2001. He also had a successful senior career winning twice on the Champions Tour and five times on the European Senior Tour between 2005 and 2012. He played in two Ryder Cup matches, 1979 and 1981. Professional career Smyth turned professional in 1974 and was a member of the European Tour for over a quarter of a century. His best finish on the European Tour Order of Merit was seventh in 1988. The 1981 European Tour was the 10th official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour and organised by the Professional Golfers' Association. The season was made up of 22 tournaments counting for the Official Money List, and some non-counting tournaments later known as "Approved Special Events". The Official Money List was won by West Germany's Bernhard Langer. Sandy Lyle
Alexander Walter Barr Lyle (born 9 February 1958) is a Scottish professional golfer. Lyle has won two major championships during his career. Along with Nick Faldo and Ian Woosnam, he became one of Britain's top golfers during the 1980s. He spent 167 weeks in the top-10 of the Official World Golf Ranking from its introduction, in 1986, until 1989. Lyle was inducted to the World Golf Hall of Fame in May 2012. Peter Oosterhuis
Peter Arthur Oosterhuis (born 3 May 1948) is an English professional golfer and golf broadcaster. Oosterhuis played on the European circuit from 1969 to 1974, winning 10 tournaments and taking the Harry Vardon Trophy for heading the Order of Merit for four consecutive seasons from 1971 to 1974. From 1975 he played on the PGA Tour, winning the Canadian Open in 1981. He was twice runner-up in the Open Championship, in 1974 and 1982. Later he became a golf analyst on TV, initially in Europe and then in the United States. In 2015, Oosterhuis announced that he had Alzheimer's disease. The BMW PGA Championship is an annual men's professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was founded in 1955 by the Professional Golfers' Association, and originally called the British PGA Championship. 1977 European Tour
The 1977 European Tour was a series of golf tournaments that comprised the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) European Tournament Players’ Division circuit. It is officially recognised as the sixth season of the PGA European Tour. Historically, the PGA's Order of Merit only included tournaments in Great Britain and Ireland, but in 1970 events in continental Europe were included for the first time. The circuit and organisation evolved further over the following years, with the Tournament Players’ Division reaching an agreement to join with their continental counterparts, the Continental Tournament Players' Association, in December 1976 and as a result added the word "European" to their name for the 1977 season.
