Manuel Ballesteros
Manuel Ballesteros Sota (born 22 June 1949) is a Spanish professional golfer. He is best known as a European Tour champion as well as being the former manager and brother of Seve Ballesteros. Golf career Ballesteros was born in the summer of 1949 in Pedreña, Spain. He learned to play golf at Real Club de Golf de Pedre in his hometown and turned pro in 1967, at the age of 18. He had an early success, winning the Open Costa Vasca in September 1968, two strokes ahead of his uncle Ramón Sota. The event was played at Biarritz Golf Club in Biarritz, France, just across the border from Spain. Shortly after the victory, Ballesteros left professional golf for two years to perform national service for his country. He returned to professional golf in the early 1970s. Pedreña
Pedreña is a village in the municipality of Marina de Cudeyo, Cantabria, northern Spain. As of 2010, its population was 1,454. Although located from Santander by road, it lies on a peninsula only about across the bay from Santander, separated from land to the east by the mouth of the Miera River. Pedreña and other parts of Santander Bay can be reached by boats which leave from Santander at regular intervals. The most famous son of Pedreña is golfer Seve Ballesteros (1957–2011); the main avenue in the village is named after him. History Pedreña Cemetery is located in the ruins of the ancient parish church. The church was under the patronage of San Pedro de Ambojo. Hennessy Cognac Cup
The Hennessy Cognac Cup was a biennial team golf tournament contested from 1976 to 1984. The contests in 1976, 1978 and 1980 were between teams of professional male golfers; one team representing Great Britain and Ireland, the other team representing Continental Europe. There was also an earlier event, in 1974, played at Sotogrande in Spain, not sponsored by Hennessy. In 1982 a third team, the Rest of the World, was added and the event became a stroke-play contest with an individual prize. The 1984 event was run on a different basis, with 10 national teams competing. The tournament was played in years when there was no Ryder Cup. The first matches between a team representing Great Britain and Ireland and a team representing Continental Europe were played for the Joy Cup from 1954 to 1958. Double Diamond International
The Double Diamond International was a team golf tournament that was played from 1971 to 1977. It was hosted in England for the first three years, and then in Scotland. From 1974 and 1977 the event was preceded by an individual 36-hole stroke play tournament that was included on the British PGA tournament circuit; the circuit would later become officially recognised as the European Tour. Winners England won in 1976 by being 2 holes up in the four matches played in the final against the Rest of the World. 1971 The tournament was played on 21, 22, and 23 October, between the four home nations at South Staffs Golf Club, with each team playing the other three. The Open Championship
The Open Championship, often referred to as The Open or the British Open, is the oldest golf tournament in the world, and one of the most prestigious. Founded in 1860, it was originally held annually at Prestwick Golf Club in Scotland. Later the venue rotated between a select group of coastal links golf courses in the United Kingdom. It is organised by the R&A. The Open is one of the four men's major golf tournaments, the others being the Masters Tournament, the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open. The 1974 European Tour was a series of golf tournaments that comprised the Professional Golfers' Association (PGA) tournament circuit. It is officially recognised as the third season of the PGA European Tour. Historically, the PGA's Order of Merit only included tournaments in Great Britain and Ireland, but in 1970 events in continental Europe were included for the first time. The circuit and organisation evolved further over the following years, adopting the name ''PGA European Golf Tour'' in 1979. The season was made up of 27 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and some non-counting "Approved Special Events".
