Mantzavinata
Mantzavinata ( el, Μαντζαβινάτα) is a village in the southwest of Kefalonia island, Greece, where the famous Mantzavino Wine is sold. Mantzavinata is 4 km southwest of Lixouri on the Paliki peninsula. Mantzavinata has three churches and a small square called Lemonata. A wine festival is held each August in Mantzavinata. Geography Mantzavinata is surrounded by hills, many covered with groves. Farming and agriculture are the main industry in Mantzavinata, although due to the nearby beaches, tourism also plays a significant part in the economy. Together with the smaller village Vouni and the islet of Vardianoi, it forms the community of Katogi. History The Maspali hill was perhaps an ancient acropolis. Lixouri
Lixouri ( el, Ληξούρι) is a town and a municipality in the island of Kefalonia, the largest of the Ionian Islands of western Greece. It is the main town on the peninsula of Paliki, and the second largest town in Kefalonia after Argostoli and before Sami. It is located south of Fiskardo and west of Argostoli. Since the 2019 local government reform it is one of the three municipalities on the island. It has one municipal unit: Paliki. History The town was founded when citizens of ancient town Pale/Pali found a new location for a town. The town was named after Paleas or Pileas, one of the four sons of the mythical king Kefalos (the island was named after king Kefalos). The old city was abandoned completely by the 16th century, but some ancient ruins can still be seen north of the town. Paliki
Paliki ( el, Παλική) is a peninsula and a former municipality on the island of Kefalonia, Ionian Islands, Greece. At the 2011 local government reform it became part of the municipality Kefalonia. In 2019 this municipality was divided into three municipalities, and the municipal unit Paliki became the only municipal unit of the new municipality Lixouri. The municipal unit has an area of 119.341 km2. The name comes from the ancient town of Pale/Pali, which was north of Lixouri and is now an archaeological site. The peninsula is the westernmost part of Kefalonia. The seat of the municipality was the town Lixouri (3,752). Mantzavineika or Mantzavinaiika (Greek: ''Μαντζαβινέικα'' or ''Μαντζαβιναίικα'') is an old neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city of Patras northeast of the Roman Odeon of Patras. The origin of the name comes from the family of Patras "Mantzavini" (Μαντζαβίνη) which lived in Sotiradi and Pantokratoros Streets. 1953 Ionian Earthquake
The 1953 Ionian earthquake (also known as the Great Kefalonia earthquake) struck the southern Ionian Islands in Greece on August 12. In mid-August, there were over 113 recorded earthquakes in the region between Kefalonia and Zakynthos, and the most destructive was the August 12 earthquake. The event measured 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale, raised the whole island of Kefalonia by , and caused widespread damage throughout the islands of Kefalonia and Zakynthos. The maximum felt intensity of shaking was X (''extreme'') on the Mercalli intensity scale. Between 445 and 800 people were killed. Archaeological Museum Of Argostoli
The Archaeological Museum of Argostoli, also known as the Kefalonia Museum is a museum in Argostoli, Greece, located a few blocks south of the central square, across the Municipal Theater on R. Vergoti St.. The old museum was destroyed by an earthquake in 1953. The current building was built in 1960 and designed by the well-known architect Patroklos Karantinos. The museum also features many other items of pottery and jewelry from excavations around the island and Melissani Lake. It also contains some 3rd-century BC tombstones, a 2nd-century BC mosaic from the temple of Poseidon and archived photographs of an 1899 excavation at Sami.
