Manor Series
The Manor series is a fleet of 42 lightweight streamlined sleeping cars built by the Budd Company for the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1954–1955. Each contained five bedrooms, one compartment, four sections and four roomettes. The cars were named for distinguished English Canadians. Via Rail acquired the fleet from the Canadian Pacific in 1978 and the cars remain in active service. Design The cars were constructed of stainless steel; save for a Tuscan red letterboard bearing the name "Canadian Pacific" they were unpainted. Each car was named for a distinguished English Canadian but did not carry numbers. As built each contained five bedrooms, one compartment, four sections and four roomettes for a maximum capacity of 24 passengers. Canadian (train)
The ''Canadian'' (french: Le Canadien) is a transcontinental passenger train operated by Via Rail with service between Union Station in Toronto, Ontario and Pacific Central Station in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Before 1955, the ''Canadian'' was a Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) train between Toronto and Chicago. On April 24, 1955, CPR renamed its best transcontinental train between Montreal/Toronto and Vancouver the ''Canadian'', with new lightweight stainless-steel equipment. Via Rail Canada took over in 1978, and, on January 15, 1990, designated the ''Canadian'' as its sole transcontinental service, between Toronto and Vancouver-only. ''The Dominion'' was a Canadian transcontinental passenger train operated by the Canadian Pacific Railway. It first began as a summer service between Toronto, Ontario and Vancouver, British Columbia, operating in 1931 and 1932. Rail transport (also known as train transport) is a means of transport that transfers passengers and goods on wheeled vehicles running on rails, which are incorporated in tracks. List Of Via Rail Rolling Stock
This is a list of past and present rolling stock owned and operated by Via Rail in Canada. Via Rail owns 78 locomotives and 619 passenger cars. The tables below list that equipment by type and include some information regarding previously owned and operated equipment. When Via began operation in 1976–1978 it was with a collection of equipment inherited from Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CP). Much of this equipment remains in use today. Over the years Via has supplemented this initial fleet with new orders and with new acquisitions of secondhand equipment from other operators. Biggar, Saskatchewan
Biggar is a town in central Saskatchewan, Canada. It is located on Highway 14, west of Saskatoon, the province's most populous city. Biggar has become well known for its unusual town slogan, an Olympic athlete, and a world-record deer. The town was featured on American morning newsmagazine ''The Today Show'' in February 2010 as part of an ongoing Canadian-oriented segment during the 2010 Winter Olympics. In rail transport, head-end power (HEP), also known as electric train supply (ETS), is the electrical power distribution system on a passenger train. The power source, usually a locomotive (or a generator car) at the front or 'head' of a train, provides the electricity used for heating, lighting, electrical and other 'hotel' needs. Tuscan Red
Tuscan red is a shade of red that was used on some railroad cars, particularly passenger cars. The color is most closely associated with the Pennsylvania Railroad, which used it on passenger cars and on its TrucTrain flatcars. It also was used extensively by the New South Wales Government Railways in Australia, in a similar fashion to the PRR. The Norfolk and Western Railway used it as an accent color on its J class steam locomotives. The Canadian Pacific Railway used it historically and painted its luxury revival cars in this color. Jasper Railway Station
Jasper station is on the Canadian National Railway mainline in Jasper, Alberta. The station is served by Via Rail's ''The Canadian'' and is the eastern terminus for the Via Rail's Jasper – Prince Rupert train. The Rocky Mountaineer company trains such as the ''Journey through the Clouds'' use the station as a terminus, these trains continue to Quesnel railway station. History Jasper was created as a railway siding in 1911 by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. It was originally called Fitzhugh, part of the Grand Trunk Pacific's alphabet line, but was renamed in 1913 when the townsite was surveyed. By 1913 both the Grand Trunk and the Canadian Northern Railway called on Jasper.
