''Manon Lescaut'' is a 1940 Italian historical drama film directed by Carmine Gallone and starring Alida Valli, Vittorio De Sica and Lamberto Picasso.Klossner p.242 It is an adaptation of the Abbé Prévost's novel of the same title. The film was made at the Cinecittà studios in Rome with sets designed by the art directors Ivo Battelli and Guido Fiorini. Carmine Gallone
Carmine Gallone (10 September 1885 – 11 March 1973) was an early Italian film director, screenwriter, and film producer, who was also controversial for his works of pro-Fascist propaganda and historical revisionism. Considered one of Italian cinema's leading early directors, he directed over 120 films in his fifty-year career between 1913 and 1963. Lola Braccini, born Camilla Cariddi (28 March 1889 - 19 March 1969) was an Italian film, television and stage actress. Life and career Born in Pisa, Braccini moved to Rome at 14 years old and debuted on stage in 1912 as an extra at the Teatro Argentina, in a theatrical work directed by Cesare Dondini. After a series of other experiences, in 1917 she entered the company held by Antonio Gandusio, with whom she stayed until 1922, while in 1924 she had her first leading roles. In 1939 Braccini debuted in a role of "mother" with the company headed by Dina Galli, and in a short time this kind of role became distinctive of her subsequent career, notably gaining critical acclaim for her performance as Christine Mannon in an adaptation of ''Mourning Becomes Electra'' directed in 1942 by Anton Giulio Bragaglia. Aroldo Tieri (28 August 1917 – 28 December 2006) was an Italian actor. He appeared in more than 100 films between 1939 and 1969. Life and career Born in Corigliano Calabro, son of the journalist and playwright Vincenzo Tieri, Aroldo Tieri moved in Rome at 18 to study law at university, and in the meanwhile approached acting and enrolled the Accademia Nazionale di Arte Drammatica Silvio D'Amico. Graduated in 1938, he almost immediately made his debut in theater and in film. Soon Tieri became one of the most popular and appreciated young actors, with a predisposition to the comic genre. Biography Born in Florence, Checchi appeared in over 150 films in his lengthy career, which spanned from 1934 to his death in 1974.
