Manhattan (drink)
A Manhattan is a cocktail made with whisky, whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. While rye whisky, rye is the traditional whiskey of choice, other commonly used whiskies include Canadian whisky, bourbon whiskey, bourbon, blended whiskey, and Tennessee whiskey. The cocktail is usually stirred then strained into a cocktail glass and garnished traditionally with a maraschino cherry. A Manhattan may also be served ice cube, on the rocks in a Old fashioned glass, lowball glass. The whiskey-based Manhattan is List of cocktails named after New York City boroughs, one of five cocktails named for a New York City borough. It is closely related to the Brooklyn (cocktail), Brooklyn cocktail, which uses dry vermouth and Maraschino liqueur in place of the Manhattan's sweet vermouth, and Sirop de Picon, Amer Picon in place of the Manhattan's angostura bitters. Rye Whiskey
Rye whiskey can refer to two different, but related, types of whiskey: * American rye whiskey, which is similar to bourbon whiskey, but must be distilled from at least 51 percent rye grain * Canadian whisky, which is often referred to as (and often labelled as) rye whisky for historical reasons, although it may or may not actually include any rye grain in its production process. An ice cube is a small piece of ice, which is typically rectangular as viewed from above and trapezoidal as viewed from the side. Ice cubes are products of mechanical refrigeration and are usually produced to cool beverages. They may be produced at home in a freezer with an ice tray or in an automated ice-making accessory. They may also be produced industrially and sold commercially. Origin of production American physician and inventor John Gorrie built a refrigerator in 1844 with the purpose of producing ice to cool air. His refrigerator produced ice which hung from the ceiling in a basin to lower the ambient room temperature. During his time, bad air quality was thought to cause disease.
