Mangalore Railway Station
Mangalore is a closed station located in the township of Mangalore, at the junction of the North East and Goulburn Valley railway lines in Victoria, Australia. The station was one of 35 closed to passenger traffic on 4 October 1981 as part of the ''New Deal'' timetable for country passengers. The former station building was moved from the site, and currently sits in a yard on the way into nearby Avenel. The station was located on a triangular wedge between the two lines, and was once the end of the double track from Melbourne. North East Railway Line
The North East railway line is a railway line in Victoria (Australia), Victoria, Australia. The line runs from Albury railway station in the border settlement of Albury–Wodonga to Southern Cross railway station on the western edge of the Melbourne Melbourne City Centre, central business district, serving the cities of Wangaratta and Seymour, Victoria, Seymour, and smaller towns in northeastern Victoria. The line runs between the border town of Tocumwal in New South Wales to Southern Cross, Melbourne. The line is utilised by various passenger and freight trains serving the northern suburbs of Melbourne and northern regions of Victoria. Following its take over by the Victorian Government in 1867, the line was extended to Tallarook and Mangalore in 1872. The New Deal for Country Passengers was a timetable introduced on 4 October 1981 in Victoria, Australia which revolutionised the provision of country passenger railway services. Thirty-five little-used passenger stations were closed, rolling stock utilisation was improved, and new rolling stock introduced. The timetable and associated service changes resulted in an average patronage growth of 8.7% per year, from 3 million in 1981 to 5.6 million passengers in 1990/91. Political background The Victorian Railways had been stuck in something of a "time warp" for a number of decades. The Bland Report of 1972 recommended the restructuring of railway management, the closure of uneconomic branch lines, and the replacement of most country rail passenger services with road coaches. Avenel is a small town in Victoria, Australia. It is in the Shire of Strathbogie local government area. At the , Avenel had a population of 1,048, up from 728 at the and 552 at the . History The Post Office opened on 2 June 1858. It is frequently stated as having been named for a village in Gloucestershire by Henry Kent Hughes. The name "Avenel" also appears in Sir Walter Scott's '' Tales from Benedictine Sources'': '' The Monastery'' (1820) and '' The Abbot'' (1820) as the name of a castle and family, that own it. Hughes settled there in 1838, laid out the future town, and named the Hughes Creek, which flows through it. The Avenel Court of Petty Sessions closed on 25 March 1969, with the former courthouse subsequently being used by local community groups.
