Mander Family
The Mander family has held for over 200 years a prominent position in the Midland counties of England, both in the family business and public life. In the early industrial revolution, the Mander family entered the vanguard of the expansion of Wolverhampton, on the edge of the largest manufacturing conurbation in the British Isles. Mander Brothers was a major employer in the city of Wolverhampton, a progressive company which became the Number One manufacturers of varnish, paint and later printing ink in the British Empire. The family became distinguished for public service, art patronage and philanthropy. Charles Tertius Mander (1852–1929) was created the first baronet of The Mount in the baronetage of the United Kingdom in the Coronation honours of George V, on 8 July 1911. Graham Mander
Graham Mander (30 June 1931 – 6 May 2021) was a New Zealand yachtsman from Christchurch. At the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico he was the reserve Flying Dutchman skipper for New Zealand. He was born in Christchurch to Stanley and Nina Mander, and was a younger brother of yachtsman Peter Mander. He started yachting in P class yachts, and was the first yachtsman to win the four main class national titles including the Saunders Cup three times. As skipper he won 13 national titles over 20 years including four Leander Trophy successes. With Peter they established the Olympic 470 class in Canterbury. He was a life member of the Christchurch Yacht Club and an honorary member of the Mt Pleasant Yacht Club. He spent "countless hours" on yacht design and construction, many in his home shed. Timothy Leonard Mander (born 9 August 1961) is an Australian politician and a former leading Australian rugby league referee. He is a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Mander was the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Leader of the Liberal National Party of Queensland. Before politics A Christian and bible college graduate, Mander was the CEO of Scripture Union Queensland. Mander controlled the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final in 2004 and 2005. He refereed a total of 291 first grade games between 1992 and 2005. He was also an NRL video referee. Richard Yates Mander
Dr. Richard Yates Mander FRCO LRAM (1862 - 31 March 1917) was an English organist and composer. Education He was born in 1862 in Leamington Spa, son of Richard Mander and Esther Evans. His father was a band master. In 1879 he passed the senior examination of Trinity College of Music, when it was held in Leamington Spa. He was awarded his ARCO in 1883 and his FRCO some time later. He graduated B.Mus (1896) and D.Mus (1902) at Queen's College, Oxford. In September 1885, he married Elizabeth Catherine Taylor. Peter Mander
Peter Garth Mander (4 July 1928 – 21 June 1998) was a New Zealand yachtsman and Olympic gold medal winner. With Jack Cropp, Mander won the Sharpie class at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne. Mander then retired from competitive yachting, but made a comeback and was selected to compete in the Finn class at the 1964 Summer Olympics where he finished fourth. He later became the president of the New Zealand Yachting Federation. Mander also won two world 18-footer championships, in 1952 and 1954, as well as 16 New Zealand national yachting titles in eight different classes. In 1972 he was named New Zealand yachtsman of the year, and in 1990 he was inducted, with Jack Cropp, into the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. Lewis Norman Mander, , FAA, FRS (8 September 1939 – 8 February 2020) was a New Zealand-born Australian organic chemist. He has widely explored the synthesis and chemistry of the gibberellin class of diterpenes over a 20-year period at the Australian National University (ANU). In particular, he studied the effect of these hormones on stem growth and on the reasons why plant undergo bolting during plant development. The July 2004 edition of the Australian Journal of Chemistry was dedicated to Mander on the occasion of his 65th birthday. He retired in 2002 but remained active at the ANU until 2014.
