Mandaveli (Chennai MRTS)
Mandaveli is a railway station on the Chennai MRTS. Located across the Venkatakrishna Road at Mandaveli, it exclusively serves the Chennai MRTS. History Mandaveli station was opened on 26 January 2004, as part of the second phase of the Chennai MRTS network. Structure The station is elevated and is built along the Buckingham Canal, covering both its banks. The station features two side platforms, and each are 280 metres long. The station building consists of 1,900 sq m of parking area in its basement. Service and connections Mandaveli station is the ninth station on the MRTS line to Velachery as well as in the return direction from Velachery. The Chennai Mass Rapid Transit System, a state-owned subsidiary of Indian Railways, is a metropolitan elevated railway line in Chennai, India. Operated by the Southern Railways, it is the first elevated railway line in India and also the country's longest elevated corridor spanning 17 km. Although it is segregated from the Chennai Suburban Railway, they both are operated by Southern Railway and are integrated in a wider urban rail network. Side Platforms
A side platform (also known as a marginal platform or a single-face platform) is a platform positioned to the side of one or more railway tracks or guideways at a railway station, tram stop, or transitway. A station having dual side platforms, one for each direction of travel, is the basic design used for double-track railway lines (as opposed to, for instance, the island platform where a single platform lies between the tracks). Mandaveli
Mandaveli (also known as Mandavelli or Mandavelipakkam) is a neighborhood in Chennai, India. It is also termed usually as Mandavelipakkam which in the Tamil language "Mandhai" is 'herd of cattle' and "Veli" is 'grassland'. Location Mandaveli is located close to the locality of Mylapore. It is bordered by Mylapore in the north, Santhome (and MRC Nagar) in the east and RA Puram in the south and in the west. It derives its name from a literal translation with reference to the rearing of cows "mandhai" meaning - "herd" and " Veli" which means open space in Tamil. Buckingham Canal
The Buckingham Canal is a -long fresh water navigation canal, that parallels the Coromandel Coast of South India from Kakinada City in the Kakinada district of Andhra Pradesh to Viluppuram District in Tamil Nadu. The canal connects most of the natural backwaters along the coast to Chennai (Madras) port. The canal was constructed during British rule, and was an important waterway during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Competition from rail and later road transport diminished its importance, and during the 20th century portions became unusable and badly polluted. More recently there is increased interest in the canal's potential to protect coastal communities from flooding by tsunamis and cyclones as well as provide a navigable waterway, and projects have been undertaken to restore and improve the canal.
