Man Of The Year (1995 Film)
''Man of the Year'' is a 1995 mockumentary film written, directed by and starring Dirk Shafer. It is a fictionalized account of Shafer's reign as ''Playgirl'' magazine's 1992 "Man of the Year" and his struggle with reconciling his public persona as a sex symbol to women with his identity as a gay man. Shafer combines mock interviews (both with some of the actual people involved and with actors standing in for the actual people) with archive footage from Shafer's appearances on talk shows like ''Donahue'', ''The Maury Povich Show'' and ''The Jerry Springer Show'' (along with an early appearance on ''Dance Fever'') and recreations of events like his Playgirl photoshoots, his "fantasy date" with a ''Playgirl'' reader and the death of his friend Pledge Cartwright (played by actor Bill Brochtrup) of an AIDS-related illness to relate the story. Dirk Shafer
Dirk Alan Shafer (November 7, 1962 – March 5, 2015) was an American model, actor, screenwriter and director. Born in Carbondale, Illinois, he was most noted in the modeling world for having been ''Playgirl'' magazine's 1992 "Man of the Year". Shafer related that he did ''Playgirl'' for "validation" as a model because he never believed himself to be attractive. Shafer wrote, directed and starred in ''Man of the Year (1995 film), Man of the Year'', a 1995 mockumentary about his time as a semi-closeted gay man in the role of a heterosexual sex symbol. Shafer's next directorial project was ''Circuit (film), Circuit'', a fictional look at the world of gay male circuit party, circuit parties. As of 2008, Shafer was working as a fitness trainer and certified Pilates instructor. In 2012, Shafer returned to the pages of ''Playgirl'' for a 20th anniversary photo spread in the August issue. ''Dance Fever'' is an American musical variety television series that aired weekly in syndication from January 1979 to September 1987. The series was technically created by Merv Griffin but his agent Murray Schwartz actually conceived the idea of a pilot which piggybacked on a special ''Merv Griffin Show'' salute to the movie '' Thank God It's Friday'' which would feature top disco dancers from 8 cities competing for a title. Casablanca Records had already paid for the set, so a pilot could be produced at a significant reduction. Merv's vision was to have frequent Griffin guest Deney Terrio as the host, and celebrities would dance with professional disco dancers.
