Mamonas Assassinas (album)
''Mamonas Assassinas'' is the only studio album released by the Brazilian rock band of same name. It was released in 1995, and in only eight months (until the end of the band), it sold more than 2 million copies. Background and recording Rick Bonadio — nicknamed by the band "Creuzebek" — was chosen to produce the band's debut album. However, their record label EMI wanted at least ten tracks and the band hand only three in hands. In a week the bandmates wrote other 12 tracks that made the cut, but "Não Peide Aqui Baby", a parody of The Beatles's "Twist and Shout", was shelved due to the amount of profanity in the lyrics. The recording took place in São Paulo, on Bonadio's studio, and was mixed at The Enterprise in Los Angeles, United States. Mamonas Assassinas was a Brazilian satirical rock band. Their musical style employed a humorous mixture between rock and a wide range of styles, often borrowing elements from other music, among which were the main riff of the Portuguese Vira ("Vira-Vira"), Northeastern Brazilian rhythms like forró ("Jumento Celestino"), Mexican music (" Pelados em Santos"), heavy metal ("Débil Metal"), sertanejo ("Bois Don't Cry"), and even pagode ("Lá Vem o Alemão"). The band's name carries a double-entendre as, in Portuguese, ''mamonas'' can be either the name of the Castor oil plant, which contains the highly toxic compound ricin (their logo incorporated a castor bean) or the augmentative for ''mamas'', meaning breasts (which were prominently pictured on the album cover). Vira (dance)
The vira is a traditional dance from Portugal. It is most popular in the Minho region but is performed in every region. It has a three-step rhythm which is very similar to a waltz, but it is faster and the couples dance front-to-front without holding hands. Another way to dance the vira is as follows: matched pairs form a big circle that revolves inversely clockwise, while the dancers snap their fingers. At a certain point the boys leave their pairs in the circle and go to the center, where they hit the floor with their right feet, and return, backing into their respective pairs. The circle starts to rotate again, and the next time the circle stops it will be the girls who go to the center. They do this alternately.
