Mama's Big Ones
''Mama's Big Ones'' is a compilation album of previously released material as noted below, by Cass Elliot. Overview Cass Elliot's solo tenure with Dunhill Records, inaugurated in the spring of 1968, had proven contentious, the label insisting the onetime member of the Mamas & Papas be billed as Mama Cass and that she resume recording in the soft rock vein which had afforded the Mamas & Papas' success. Elliot would in 1971 claim that at Dunhill she had been "forced to be so bubble gum that I'd stick to the floor when I walked", and in fact Elliot's solo singles had been progressively less successful, Dunhill president Jay Lasker commenting after Elliot's sixth solo single stalled at #42 in early 1970 "'New World Coming' has gotten great airplay because it came along and expressed hope in the midst of despair. Cass Elliot
Ellen Naomi Cohen (September 19, 1941 – July 29, 1974), known professionally as Mama Cass and later on as Cass Elliot, was an American singer and voice actress. She was a member of the singing group the Mamas & the Papas. After the group broke up, Elliot released five solo albums. In 1998, she was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for her work with the Mamas & the Papas. Early life Ellen Naomi Cohen was born in Baltimore, Maryland, on September 19, 1941, the daughter of Philip (died 1962) and Bess Cohen (née Levine; 1915–1994). All four of her grandparents were Russian Jewish immigrants. Her family was subject to significant financial stresses and uncertainties during her childhood years. Her father, involved in several business ventures, ultimately succeeded through the development of a lunch wagon in Baltimore that provided meals to construction workers. The Papas & The Mamas
''The Papas & The Mamas'' is the fourth studio album by the American folk rock, vocal group the Mamas and the Papas, released in 1968. The most recognizable recording “Twelve Thirty (young girls are coming to the canyon)” was written by band member Cass Elliot in the early 60s when she first moved to California’s Laurel Canyon. This album also shown new light on Cass Elliot’s talent as a solo singer. About the same time this album was being released Cass had begun writing and performing her own songs as a solo artist. In 1968 taking it upon herself, without the acknowledgment of fellow band member John Phillips, Cass billed her own recording of a popular song from the 30s “Dream a Little Dream of me” onto this record shooting her into the public’s minds as this was the last album the group recorded until 1971.In between Cass performed Solo with wide success.
