Malley Fitness Center
The Pat Malley Fitness and Recreation Center at Santa Clara University was constructed in 1999 and provided ample new space for on-campus recreational activities. Dedicated October 8, 1999, the center is the primary sports and fitness center for the general population at Santa Clara University. Built at a cost of $8.8 million, the facility is named for legendary SCU football coach Pat Malley and includes three full basketball/volleyball courts, a large weight room, two locker rooms, a multipurpose room, lounge space, and new offices for recreation and wellness programs. As weight and fitness facilities are available for University athletics in the Leavey Center, Malley is always open to the campus community for recreational use. SCU alumni, including many of Coach Malley's former football players, were significantly involved in the financing, planning and construction of the facility, which includes approximately $400,000 in exercise equipment. George Patrick "Pat" Malley
George Patrick Malley (February 28, 1931 – May 18, 1985) was an American football coach. He served as the Santa Clara University head coach from 1959 until his death in 1985. Early life and education Born in San Francisco, Malley graduated from St. Ignatius College Preparatory in 1949. Malley then attended the University of Santa Clara, where he played at offensive guard and linebacker on the football team in 1950 and 1951 before graduating from the university in 1953. Malley was part of the Santa Clara 1950 Orange Bowl championship team. Coaching career In 1952, Malley coached the Santa Clara freshman team. After graduating from Santa Clara, Malley served in the 4th Armored Division of the United States Army. Malley returned to coaching in 1956 when he became head coach at his alma mater St. Ignatius Prep. Leavey Center
Leavey Center, also known as the Leavey Activities Center or occasionally by its old nickname the Toso Pavilion, is Santa Clara University's indoor basketball arena in Santa Clara, California. It is home to the Santa Clara University Broncos Division I Basketball and Volleyball Teams. It has hosted the West Coast Conference men's basketball tournament ten times. Arena history Leavey Center began life as the Harold J. Toso Pavilion, or Toso Pavilion constructed in 1975. The facility featured an air supported vinyl fabric roof supported by 11 large fans constantly producing a higher air pressure inside the dome than outside, similar to the Pontiac Silverdome or BC Place Stadium. The inside of the facility featured the main activity floor, two recreation areas, and team locker rooms. The roof developed several tears over the years and on April 4, 2000, the dome was deflated to make room for a more permanent roof structure to be built over the arena. Bill McPherson (American Football)
Bill McPherson (October 24, 1931 – March 17, 2020) was an American professional football coach in the National Football League (NFL). He was the San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator from 1989 to 1993. He was a coach or front office executive in the 49ers organization from 1979 to 2005 and won five Super Bowls. McPherson was most known for his ability to coach the defensive line, serving as coach of that position for Santa Clara University (1963–1974), UCLA (1975–1977), Philadelphia Eagles (1978), and San Francisco 49ers (1979–1991, 1994–1998). While with Santa Clara, he also served as linebackers coach and associate head coach. Brent Jones
Brent Michael Jones (born February 12, 1963) is an American former professional football player, business executive, businessman, coach, and sports analyst. As a player, he was a tight end for the San Francisco 49ers during his entire 11-year career in the National Football League (NFL) from 1987 to 1997. Jones is listed among the top players in franchise history, and helped revolutionize the concept of the pass-catching tight end. After playing college football at Santa Clara University, Jones was selected 135th overall by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the fifth round of the 1986 NFL Draft.
