Mallakam ( ta, மல்லாகம், translit=Mallākam) ( si, මල්ලකම්) is a town in northern Sri Lanka located approximately north of the city of Jaffna. Mallakam railway station ( ta, மல்லாகம் தொடருந்து நிலையம் ''Mallākam toṭaruntu nilaiyam'', si, මල්ලකම් දුම්රිය ස්ථානය) is a railway station in the town of Mallakam in northern Sri Lanka. Owned by Sri Lanka Railways, the state-owned railway operator, the station is part of the Northern Line which links the north with the capital Colombo. In Sri Lanka, provinces ( si, පළාත, translit=Paḷāta; ta, மாகாணம், translit=Mākāṇam) are the first level administrative division. They were first established by the British rulers of Ceylon in 1833. Local government is the third and lowest level of government in Sri Lanka – after the central government and provincial councils. The local government bodies are collectively known as local authorities. They are responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. Local authorities are divided into three different groups: municipal councils, urban councils and divisional councils (pradeshiya sabha or pradesha sabhai).
