Malcolm Reed
Malcolm Reed (born 11 February 1958) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Geelong in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Reed, recruited locally, made his VFL debut in 1978 but wasn't a regular member of the side until 1982. In between he enjoyed team success in the reserves, with premierships in 1980 and 1981, the former as club captain. He tied for the 1981 Gardiner Medal and although the award was awarded initially to Daryl Vernon on count back, he was declared joint winner the week after when the league changed the rules. Australian football, also called Australian rules football or Aussie rules, or more simply football or footy, is a contact sport played between two teams of 18 players on an oval field, often a modified cricket ground. Australian Football League
The Australian Football League (AFL) is the only fully professional competition of Australian rules football. Gardiner Medal
{{Use Australian English, date=January 2018 The Gardiner Medal was an Australian rules football award, formerly awarded to the best and fairest player in the VFL Reserves competition. Officially named the Seconds prior to 1959 and the Reserves from 1959 onwards, the competition ran from 1919 until 1999 and the medal was first awarded in 1926. The Medal was named in honour of Frank Gardiner, a former president of the VFL Seconds. The award was voted for by the field umpires at the conclusion of each match in the same format as used in the senior grade's Brownlow Medal. As for the Brownlow Medal, ties were originally decided on a countback of who received the most "best-on-ground" votes. Daryl Vernon
Daryl Vernon (born 9 June 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond and the Sydney Swans in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the 1980s. A rover from Essex Heights, Vernon made four senior appearances for Richmond in the 1981 VFL season. He performed well in the reserves that year and shared the Gardiner Medal with Geelong's Malcolm Reed. He spent 1982 in Western Australia, where he played for South Fremantle. Vernon returned to the VFL in 1983 and signed with the Sydney Swans, who had relocated from South Melbourne the previous year. He played in the opening four rounds of the season and averaged 18 disposals, but didn't feature again until he played another four games early in the 1984 season. He was back at Richmond in 1985 and in his third game of the season, against Melbourne at the MCG, starred with 30 disposals, an effort which earned him three Brownlow Medal votes. The 1982 VFL season was the 86th season of the Victorian Football League (VFL), the highest level senior Australian rules football competition in Victoria. The season featured twelve clubs, ran from 20 March until 25 September, and comprised a 22-game home-and-away season followed by a finals series featuring the top five clubs.
