Malankara Syrian Metropolitans
Mar Thoma Metropolitan, also known as Malankara Syrian Metropolitan or Malankara Metropolitan, is the title which is given to the Supreme Head of the Malankara Church. The Malankara Church was split into different factions over the years. However the Supreme Head of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church uses the title of Mar Thoma Metropolitan upholding the autonomous character of the Malankara Church. The Current Marthoma Metropolitan of The Holy Apostolic Throne of St Thomas is Dr Theodosius Mar Thoma of Malankara. This title is however not recognized by the Supreme Court of India and is therefore considered a symbolic title held by the Mar Thoma Syrian Church alone. Mar Dionysius II
Mar Dionysius II, born Pulikkottil Joseph Ittoop (15 January 1742 – 24 November 1816) was 10th Malankara Metropolitan for nine months until his death on 24 November 1816. He dethroned Mar Thoma IX and succeeded him by the favour of Col.John Munroe, then British Resident of Travancore. Despite the brevity of his reign he made lasting contributions to the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church. Mar Dionysius II is also known as Pulikkottil Mar Dionysius I as he was the first Metropolitan from the ancient Pulikkottil family of Kunnamkulam. He was able to keep up the traditions, improve the knowledge of the people and decree that the assets of the Metropolitan would be assets of the Church. Joseph Mar Thoma XXI (27 June 1931 – 18 October 2020) ( syr, ܡܺܝܛܪܳܦܽܠܶܝܬܳܐ ܕܟܽܘܪܣܝܳܐ ܫܠܺܝܚܳܝܳܐ ܕܡܰܠܰܒܰܪ ܐܰܒܽܘܢ ܝܰܘܣܶܝܦ ܡܳܪܝ̱ ܬܳܐܘܡܳܐ܀) was the 21st Mar Thoma Syrian Church Metropolitan and the church’s primate. Early days Palakunnathu family In the seventeenth century Kerala, a member of the Panamkuzhy house of Kuruvalingadu, Kuruvilla came and settled in Kozhencherry on the banks of river Pampa. Alexander Mar Thoma XIX Metropolitan (10 April 1912 – 11 January 2000) was the Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church with its center in Kerala state in south-western India. Abraham Mar Thoma XVII Metropolitan (30 October 1879 – 1 September 1947) was the Metropolitan of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church from 1944–1947. Titus II Mar Thoma
Titus II Mar Thoma Metropolitan (Mar Thoma XVI) (6 May 1866 – 6 July 1944) was the head of the Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church with its center in Kerala state in south-western India. He was known as Thithoos Dwitheeyan Mar Thoma Metropolitan among his people. Thomas Mar Athanasius (Mar Thoma XIV) aka Thomas Thirumeni (7 October 1836 – 10 August 1893) was the Malankara Metropolitan of the autonomous Malankara Syrian Church faction of Malankara, from 1877 to 1893. Mathews Mar Athanasius
Mathews Mar Athanasius (Mar Thoma XIII) (25 April 1818 – 16 July 1877) was the Malankara Metropolitan of the Malankara Church from 1852 until 1865. As a reformer, he spent most of his reign attempting to reform and heal rifts within the church. However in 1865, he was deposed by the traditionalist faction of the Malankara Church and Pulikkottil Joseph Dionysius became their leader. Mathews started his career in the church in childhood, and was influenced by the Church Mission Society and his uncle Abraham Malpan, a priest who instituted reforms in Maramon parish in 1840.
