Malandro Records
Malandro Records was an American record label based in Cincinnati, Ohio, which released albums by Brazilian musicians. Founded by Rick Warm, the label released about 20 albums before it ceased operation. The label's name came from the Portuguese word ''malandragem'', a person who lived a certain type of free lifestyle. Helio Alves
Helio Alves (born 1966) is a jazz pianist and son of pianists. He moved to Boston, Massachusetts at 18 to study at the Berklee College of Music. He remained in Boston until age 24, then moved to New York City on advice from a friend. He has collaborated for many years with Claudio Roditi, including on the Grammy nominated ''Brazilliance X4'' (2007). He was the featured soloist on ''Then Again'' as a member of the Paul Peress Trio. He was a member of the band Circlechant led by Santi Debriano and has worked with Rosa Passos, Joyce, Duduka da Fonseca, Airto Moreira, and Maucha Adnet. In 2003 he was pianist on the Grammy-winning album of ''Obrigado Brasil'' by Yo Yo Ma, ''Big Band'' by Joe Henderson, and ''Brazilian Dreams'' by Paquito D'Rivera. Paulinho Nogueira (Campinas, 8 October 1929 – São Paulo, 2 August 2003) was a Brazilian guitarist, composer and singer. Biography He was an eclectic composer, his influences ranging from bossa nova to Bach. Paulinho Nogueira designed the craviola, a guitar with a sloping bout and offset body shape. Dianne Elizabeth Reeves (born October 23, 1956) is an American jazz singer. Biography Dianne Reeves was born in Detroit, Michigan, into a musical family. Her father sang, her mother played trumpet, her uncle is bassist Charles Burrell, and her cousin is George Duke. Her father died when she was two years old, and she was raised in Denver, Colorado, by her mother, Vada Swanson, and maternal family. Jovino Santos Neto
Jovino Santos Neto (born September 18, 1954) is a Seattle-based Brazilian-American jazz pianist, flutist, composer, arranger, educator and record producer. Career Jovino Santos Neto started playing piano at age 13 and by 16 was playing keyboards in a band called the Vacancy Group in Bangu, Rio de Janeiro. He earned a degree in Biology, from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and later from Macdonald College of McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. In 1977, he joined the group led by Brazilian composer Hermeto Pascoal, working as a pianist, flutist, composer, arranger and producer. Since leaving Hermeto's group in 1992 and relocating to the United States, Santos Neto has released several albums. He has toured internationally as the leader of his own ensemble and with musicians such as Airto Moreira, Flora Purim, and Mike Marshall. Elza da Conceição Soares ( née Gomes; 23 June 1930 – 20 January 2022), known professionally as Elza Soares (), was a Brazilian samba singer. In 1999, she was named Singer of the Millennium along with Tina Turner by BBC Radio. Elza was deemed dangerous by the Military dictatorship in Brazil (1964–1985), and in 1970 her house in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, in Rio de Janeiro, was machine-gunned by regime agents. Inside were her partner Garrincha and their children. The living room, where the young children were, was destroyed by the blasts. She and Garrincha had to flee to Italy, where they were received by Chico Buarque de Hollanda also in exile.
