Malampuzha River
Malampuzha River is one of the tributaries of the river Kalpathipuzha. Malampuzha Dam is built across the river at Malampuzha about 8 km from the Palakkad town in the Indian state of Kerala. The reservoir formed by the Malampuzha Dam is 23.13 square kilometres in area and is the second largest reservoir in Kerala after the Idukki reservoir. The construction of Malampuzha dam started in the year 1949 and was completed in the year 1955. The project is estimated to have cost around Rs. 5.3 Crores (53 million). Malampuzha river joins Kalpathipuzha, a tributary of Bharathapuzha at Palakkad. Kalpathipuzha then flows westward to join Kannadipuzha at Parali to form Bharathapuzha, which ultimately flows until Ponnani, passing through towns and villages Mankara, Pathirippala, Lakkidi, Thiruvilwamala, Ottapalam, Mayannur, Shoranur, Cheruthuruthy, Thirumittakode, Pattambi, Thrithala, Kudallur, Kuttippuram, Thirunavaya and Chamravattom. Kalpathipuzha
Kalpathipuzha River is one of the main tributaries of the Bharathapuzha River, the second-longest river in Kerala, south India. The Kalpathipuzha originates in the upper slopes of the Western Ghats deep inside Palakkad district from the place called Chenthamarakulam in the hills, north of Walayar. It is formed from the confluence of four tributaries, namely the Malampuzha River, Walayar River, Korayar River and Varattar River. The Malampuzha Dam is built across this river just before it enters Palakkad town. The river is named after the Kalpathi Siva temple in Palakkad town which is famous for its festival. One of the problems faced by the Kalpathypuzha, like most other rivers in Kerala, is illegal sand mining. This has left many pits in the river bed, which leads to shrub growth. Lakkidi or Lakkidi Perur is a small village in Ottapalam Taluk of Palakkad district, Kerala, India. It is located 23 km west of Palakkad on the Palakkad - Pattambi Road. Thirunavaya
Tirunavaya, also spelled as Thirunavaya, is a town in Malappuram, Kerala. Situated on the northern bank of Bharatappuzha (River Ponnani/Nila or Perar), it is one of major Hindu pilgrimage centres in Kerala. Tirunavaya, home to Tirunavaya Temple (Navamukunda/Vishnu Temple) and temples of Siva and Brahma (Cherutirunavaya Brahma Temple and Siva Temple/Tirunavaya Mahadeva Temple), is one of the most prominent places for bali tarpana on Karkitaka vavu in Kerala. Kuttippuram
Kuttippuram is a town and a block headquarters, which is situated in the Tirur Taluk, Malappuram district of Kerala state, India. The town is located 34 kilometres south-west of Malappuram. The Bharathappuzha river flows through Kuttippuram. According to the last Census of India conducted in 2011, Kuttippuram forms a portion of the Malappuram metropolitan area. Kudallur is in the Palakkad district of Kerala. It is in Pattambi taluk, bordering Malappuram district, also on the banks of Bharathapuzha. Thrithala
Thrithala is a town and a village in Pattambi taluk in Palakkad District of Kerala state, South India. The town is located along the banks of Bharathapuzha and is famed for its Shiva temple. History The legend of ' Parayi petta panthirukulam' is centred on Trithala. According to this story, a Brahmin named Vararuchi, married a lower caste woman without knowing her true identity(?). After the marriage, they set out on a long journey. During the course of the journey, the woman became pregnant several times, and every time she delivered a baby, the husband asked her to leave it there itself. Each of the babies was taken up by people of different castes (totally 12), thus they grew up in that caste, making the legendary 'Panthirukulam'.
