Malajube
Malajube is a Canadian francophone indie rock band formed in Montreal, Quebec. History Formed by a group of friends in Sorel-Tracy, Québec, the band made itself known in 2004 with the release of its first album, '' Le Compte complet''. Critics welcomed the disc with positive reviews, which allowed the group to become instantly famous in the Quebec music scene. Several of its songs, such as "Le Métronome" and "La Valérie", were prominent mainstays on several Quebec radio stations. For the production of the album, the group turned to Martin Pelland from fellow Montreal band The Dears. In the months that followed the release of their first album, Malajube launched a tour across Quebec, participating in several major festivals, such as Les FrancoFolies de Montréal. Trompe-l'oeil (album)
''Trompe-l'œil'' is the second album by the indie rock band Malajube, released in 2006 on Dare to Care Records. The album is inspired in part by medical themes; in the album's liner notes, each song is given a subtitle relating to some aspect of physical or mental health. Critical reception Unusual for a French language album from Quebec, the album received significant critical attention in both English Canada and the United States, including airplay on CBC Radio 3 and a favourable review on Pitchfork Media. The album was also shortlisted for the 2006 Polaris Music Prize. It was the first francophone album to be on that award's shortlist. Music Of Quebec
Like many cosmopolitan cities, Quebec is a home for all genres of music. From folk music to hip hop, music has always played an important role in Quebecer culture. In the 1920s and '30s singer/songwriter Madam Bolduc performed comedic songs in a folk style with Irish influences. Quebec's most popular artists of the last century include the singers: Félix Leclerc (1950s), Gilles Vigneault (1960s–present), Kate and Anna McGarrigle (1970s–present) and Céline Dion (1980s–present). The First Nations and the Inuit of Quebec also have their own traditional music. A local variety of Celtic music is also found. Quebec also has many well-known jazz musicians and a culture of classical music. City Slang is an independent record label based in Berlin, Germany. History The label was founded in 1990 by former tour agent Christof Ellinghaus, exclusively to release The Flaming Lips' '' In A Priest Driven Ambulance (With Silver Sunshine Stares)''. With bands The Lemonheads, Das Damen, and Yo La Tengo also looking for a label to release their 1990 albums, City Slang became, almost by chance, a home for US bands looking to bring their music to the European market. Valerie Jodoin Keaton
Valerie Jodoin Keaton is a Canadian photographer and musician. Photography career In 2001, Valerie Jodoin Keaton earned a degree in commercial photography at Dawson's Institute of Photography. In 2009, Jodoin Keaton published a book, ''Backstage'', which depicts rock musicians moments before and after their performances. Her collection contains photos of numerous rock stars, among whom are The Flaming Lips, Beastie Boys, The Smashing Pumpkins, Beck, Rufus Wainwright, Paul McCartney and Jack White. Jodoin Keaton was selected for Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History From 1955 to the Present, the first major museum exhibition of rock music photography. Loco Locass
Loco Locass are a Canadian hip hop group from Quebec formed in 1995. The group often defends the role of the French language, and champions Quebec sovereignty. Songs such as " ROC Rap" and "Résistance" highlight the band's political leanings, and their strong advocacy for Quebec to be an independent country. Their song "Le But" was previously used as the goal song of the Montreal Canadiens and was played after every goal the Canadiens scored at the Bell Centre until the start of the 2017-18 NHL Season. "Le But" was recently brought back as the Canadiens' victory song. Pierre Lapointe
Pierre Lapointe (born 23 May 1981) is a Canadian singer-songwriter. His work largely follows in the tradition of French chanson, though he is influenced by modern pop music. Defining himself as a "popular singer", he has built an egocentric persona of a dandy onstage, but says he does this mostly to deflect attention from himself. His records have found critical and commercial success in Canada. His regular tours in France ensured him a growing popularity as well as critical recognition. Life and career Early life Pierre Lapointe was born in Alma, Quebec, and grew up in Gatineau. He began studying visual arts in 1999, but changed his program and started to take theatre courses at the Cégep de Saint-Hyacinthe. ''Pitchfork'' (formerly ''Pitchfork Media'') is an American online music publication (currently owned by Condé Nast) that was launched in 1995 by writer Ryan Schreiber as an independent music blog. Schreiber started Pitchfork while working at a record store in suburban Minneapolis, and the website earned a reputation for its extensive coverage of indie rock music. The Félix Award (french: Trophée Félix or Prix Félix) is an award, given by the ''Association du disque, de l'industrie du spectacle québécois'' ( ADISQ) on an annual basis to artists working in the music and humor industry in the Canadian province of Quebec.
